Fairphone 4 iodéOS `7.5` update clarification

There are several different threads discussing FP4 issues either going from iodéOS 6.x to 7.x and/or 7.4 to 7.5. I will try to make some baseline / clarification points here that consolidate the issues: then I will link here on the numerous threads and we can go from there depending on the specific case.

First, the case still remains that if your FP4 is bootloader locked, you will need to either do a factory reset and update install from Recovery or instead do a clean install again: Fairphone 4 update to iodéOS 7.4 You can replace the 7.4 download with the 7.5 download, it isn’t known that there is any regression between these 2. You do not need to install 7.4 and then upgrade to 7.4: you can install 7.5 directly to upgrade from 6.x.

Second, it was an error that the 7.5 OTA update was advertised in the “Updater” app if you are on 6.x, and it was since removed again so it isn’t advertised. Possibly if it showed the download to you before, and it was already downloaded to the “Updater” app it is installable, but once again it will fail if your bootloader is locked.

Third, in any case if an upgrade is done that leaves your device unbootable, then “6-7” failed boot attempts will revert the device to your previous install. Your user data is not lost! Do not reset your device unless you want to erase your data! If you are not able to get it to boot back to the previous system automatically, then you will need to use fastboot to do it, which we can advise on.

Fourth, it is not confirmed that 7.4 > 7.5 has an issue: this is where some users are reporting different results: if you had already installed and used 7.4 fine, and then have an issue with 7.4 > 7.5, can you confirm the following:

  • Is your bootloader re-locked?
  • Did you use the “Updater” app to go from 7.4 to 7.5?
  • Give exact message: is it the init_user0_failed message described here?
