Multiple Stability and Functional Issues on Fairphone 6

First, I want to say how much I enjoy using iodéOS. The interface feels incredibly clean, and the system generally runs very fast, which is exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate the work the team puts into this project.

However, over the last two months of daily use, I have noticed several recurring issues that have become more apparent as I upgraded from version 7.1 to 7.3. I wanted to compile these observations into one report to help the team identify patterns and prioritize fixes. I apologize if this is a long list, but I hope providing this consolidated feedback helps improve the experience for everyone. I tried to structure the issues based on the advice found on your homepage and ordered by priority for daily use.

High Priority: Critical Stability Issues

  1. Notification Bar Crash (Started in v7.3)

    • Observation: Since updating to 7.3, pulling down the notification bar to view quick settings tiles consistently causes the system to crash directly to the lock screen.

    • Impact: This makes the device very difficult to use as a daily driver.

  2. General App and System Instability

    • Observation: There is frequent instability when interacting with menus (hamburger or kebab/three-dot menus).

    • Specifics: Firefox often crashes when tapping the URL bar or scrolling through tabs. In the system settings, accessing options via three-dot menus sometimes crashes the app back to the main settings screen or locks the device.

    • Impact: Many core features are currently inaccessible or unreliable.

Medium Priority: Functional Limitations

  1. Camera Resolution Support

    • Observation: The camera does not seem to utilize the full 50MP capability of the Fairphone 6. While Google Camera works, it doesn’t reach full resolution.

    • Question: Are there plans to integrate the native Fairphone camera driver or offer a workaround?

  2. SafetyNet Attestation Failures

    • Observation: The device fails SafetyNet attestation in microG settings.

    • Impact: This likely affects app compatibility. For instance, the Sparkasse “Mobiles Bezahlen” app crashes during payment confirmation, and some games may be affected.

    • Question: Is this expected behavior, and are there known solutions?

  3. Wi-Fi Connectivity (Worsened in v7.3)

    • Observation: Since moving to 7.3, Wi-Fi connections seem less stable, with more frequent drops compared to version 7.1.

Low Priority: Minor Bugs & Feature Requests

  1. Physical Switch Behavior

    • Observation: The switch is limited to silencing and sometimes fails to toggle correctly, requiring multiple presses. Occasionally, it switches modes randomly.

    • Question: Are there plans to expand its functionality?

  2. Launcher Display Glitch

    • Observation: System apps like Settings and File Manager show their package names (e.g., com.android.settings) instead of their friendly names in the launcher.
  3. Wi-Fi Calling Setting

    • Observation: Enabling Wi-Fi calling in settings does not reflect in the status; it still shows as disabled.
  4. Screen Freeze

    • Observation: If the screen stays on for a long time (e.g., using Maps while hiking), the device occasionally freezes completely, requiring turning off and on the screen.
  5. Display Artifacts

    • Observation: Rare, random full-screen flashes of yellow or green occur, seemingly linked to brightness adjustments, though not consistently reproducible.
  6. Network Name Visibility

    • Observation: The network name remains visible in the status bar even when the setting to hide it is turned off.

I am willing to test any fixes or provide further details, so feel free to ask!

Are you using the “stock Trebuchet launcher”? If not, I think there were some threads about custom alternatives (Lawnchair, etc.) causing such instability from the notfications, but also with “recent apps” (your item 2).

With so many issues noted, this thread will become quite difficult to sift through to see what has been addressed and what hasn’t. Let’s see how it goes, but I may suggest splitting this thread into these bits:

Thread 1: Items 1 and 2: Stability / crashes. Leave this here.

Thread 2: edit and create in a new thread: FP6 Camera stuff

Thread 3: SafetyNet, but this is discussed in several threads already, not a FP6 issue per se.

The reset also probably to separate issues as it will be better to identify when a solution is found for each one for future users.

As suggested, I am only keeping the critical stability issues here and moving the other issues to different threads.

I am using the preinstalled Trebuchet launcher, so the issue does not appear to be caused by the alternatives you mentioned. It is also worth mentioning that general instability has been present in version 7.1, while crashes when opening the quick settings tile have appeared following the upgrade to version 7.3.

Heyhey,
I recently reported an issue at the FP6’s LOS github page and we found some interesting patterns that make the switch misbehave.

Thank you for pointing this out to me! The issue is persisting in iodé 7.4 for me (actually got worse with the button reacting to minor touches too, causing vibration), but since this seems to be a LineageOS problem I don’t think it makes much sense to keep the discussion here. This thread is supposed to focus on critical stability issues on the FP6 only.
