I’ve been putting off upgrading to 7.4 (until I have good backups), and now that 7.5 has showed up in my Updater app, I’m not sure what to do.
Is it safe to just upgrade to 7.5 (from 6.13) through the Updater app, like a typical OTA update?
Or should I follow the instructions from the News app to do a local update to 7.4 and then do a regular OTA update to 7.5?
Or, do I need to download 7.5 from Github and do a local update following the instructions for the 6.13 → 7.4 jump? (I don’t see how this could be the way, but you never know.)
Seeing reports of bootloops and other issues, treading carefully (this is my daily and only driver).
You will need to to install the upgrade advice from the News app or from this discussion: Fairphone 4 update to iodéOS 7.4 but can replace 7.4 downloads with 7.5 (as your last thought suggests). What I mean is that a full data reset is needed before the upgrade will succeed.
So while there is no need to upgrade to 7.4 and then to 7.5, it still does require using a terminal and manually upgrading to 7.5 via Recovery, or instead performing a full reinstallation of 7.5. Sorry to not bring you any better news.
Thanks for replying! Are you sure this applies to an unlocked bootloader? What you write seems right for locked bootloaders but, last I saw, the initial instructions for 6.13→7.4 via local update are reported to work well for unlocked bootloaders.
My concern is rather whether I’ll need to do a local update 6.13→7.4 and then an OTA 7.4→7.5, or does the 7.5 OTA work when going from 6.13? Like @PabloFiddle says, it looks like there are problems doing an OTA from 7.4 to 7.5, so the chances of it working from 6.13 seem pretty slim.
My understanding is that the original method (from the News app) for doing a local update fails for locked bootloaders but works without the need for a data reset on unlocked ones - here’s hoping I’m not wrong about that, I really don’t feel like doing a “nuke ‘n’ pave” on this phone
Sorry I didn’t note the “unlocked” part as you suspected
There should be no need to go 6.13 > 7.4 > 7.5, it doesn’t do anything different than 6.13 > 7.5. But maybe there is an issue with 7.5? I am checking with the team if they can re-test.
I got confirmation that in testing 6.x > 7.5 with an unlocked bootloader works fine for the FP4 using the OTA update. If an issue is encountered, do NOT reset your data but you may need to change the active slot. Let us know if that happens.
Awesome, thank you! Changing slots won’t be a problem if it comes to that, and I’ll have good backups before pulling the trigger in any case.
I really appreciate all the effort that goes into testing. I know the FP4 doesn’t make it easy sometimes (nearly bricked mine trying to relock the bootloader when I first got it and flashed iodeOS - some of them have some kind of FW/HW flaw, apparently).
Happy to report that a local update from 6.13 to 7.5 (OTA version from Gitlab) went off without a hitch. Thanks again!
Some slight weirdness in the Updater app (6.14 had suddenly appeared and 7.5 disappeared), but the update itself progressed just like any other. A little quicker, maybe, if anything
