Unofficial build for Sony Xperia ZX1 Compact (lilac)

The ROM (the TWRP-install version) works perfectly for me, no sign of failing.

As I posted previously, I did have that earspeaker-call-audio problem for a while, now fixed, but that was seemingly unrelated to the ROM.

I’m going to give this mod’ a go when I get back from holiday. I’ve got an XZ1 I was given about a year ago by a friend of mine who understands my passion for Sony’s, or obsession with ‘art deco’ phones as my partner prefers to tease me with. The phone looks a little tired and also appears to have a battery or maybe USB/charging port board problem. Never really looked at it but might just spend a few quid on ebay to sort it out.

Would be worth it just for the play I’m thinking. If it works out I’ll treat the phone to a new screen and rear panel.

XZ1 or XZ1 Compact. Thus unofficial build is only for XZ1 Compact… For XZ1 there is an official build available from Iodé

It’s a compact for sure Pete and it was more a friend of my partner’s that gave it to me TBH, consequently it’s in a rather nauseating shade of Inyerface Pink. Hence the reason it has stayed in my drawer for a while and probably the real reason as to why I might treat it to a new case. It does have that used and abused look about it even though everything still appears to work ok, so long as you have it plugged in to a power source.

Sony sold an awful lot of these to women that wanted something a little more discreet than the kind of phones you could paddle a canoe with that manufacturers seem to prefer to make today. After Sony’s ‘art deco’ renaissance period  I lost interest in their products and everyone else’s too come to think of it.

I managed to revive my phone with SIM detection / IMEI. First: Backup everything, data manually, apps with the android backup tool.

I installed last SONY Android 9 Stock ROM with newflasher. Then, the SIM / IMEI worked again.

Then I flashed first official TWRP 3.7, formated data and wiped dalvic cache/cache/system.

Then I flashed the unofficial TWRP 3.6.2 ByYoshino, formated data and wiped again (for security) and installed IodeOS5 with adb sideload.

IodeOS worked then with SIM / IMEI. I had to recover of course my apps and data manually from the bakcups.
I hope it stays now fixed.

Well, I’ve done it and like you, it’s back, I hope for a long time !
Thanks to you and everyone who helped

Great! Happy that you could recover it! I still wonder what happened? I didn’t do anything, didn’t swap Sim or anything. Just yesterday it stopped working.

Neither do I. Really weird. I hope it stays like this, working

Some further explanations:

  • Newflasher is a tool available at XDA to flash Sony stock ROM. you use it in download mode of the phone. the download mode is started when the phone is switched off, keep VOLUME UP pressed and connect an USB cable. The green led should be shining. then, newflasher can be used as explained in the XDA thread.
  • TWRP 3.7 official is necessary to format data of the Sony stock ROM with android 9. However, that twrp version is not compatible with modern Android 14 Roms. so, you then need to flash TWRP 3.6.2 by Yoshino and from there you use adb side load for e.g. iodeos.
  • Why this complicated workflow? if you flash directly TWRP 3.6.2, it cannot decrypt the data partition from the Sony ROM and you get stuck at the splash screen.

I know you have found a fix for this already, but I’m posting the following link in case it can help others:

Spent a little time yesterday on ebay looking for XZ1 parts and just happened to come across an interesting scam involving cheap refurbished Chinese G8441 phones and motherboards. Relevance to the thread is tenuous I know, but to anyone thinking of buying a ‘refurbished’ XZ1 phone or motherboard it’s essential reading. Buyer beware! It’s also an interesting read as to how they have managed to do it despite the lack of functionality in the final product.

Hi Pete,

thank you so much, I will bookmark this and try it out if it ever happens again! Would be nice to fix it without re-flashing stock ROM and recoverying everything. That was about 3h work.

Best regards, Roman

This morning I had again the same problem. No SIM then white screen etc…
So I tried your link, which I saw, by the way, the first time it happened but I didn’t dare to try it, stupid I am, because it worked !!!
Thanks a lot

Shouldn’t that be VOLUME DOWN?

VOLUME UP is for fastboot, right?
