My issue with iodeOS (previous Calyx User) How to use normal Gcam

Pixel 8 Pro. Switched from Calyx.
I can’t install Google Pixel Camera with Aurora Style like on Calyx. Shouldn’t that work?

Read this?

Why do I need a mod / port for a device that has the capabilities to do it without it

now I can’t even login to whatsapp omg I think I will just go back to the rooted experience I hate backups and stuff like this without root :sob:

Hello,

Migrating from CalyxOS too, but with a Pixel 7a. Same issue. And absolutely NO WAY to install some random Gcam mod. This is purelly insane from a security point of view.

After digging a bit, 2 things are problematic:

  1. missing feature GOOGLE_EXPERIENCE to allow download of Gcam from AuroraStore. Explanation and fix here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/1cbucdr/comment/l1o8obw With this, you can download Gcam from AuroraStore
  2. iodeos 6 seems to bundle “something“ in the system app that is using the com.google.android.apps.camera.services app name (which should be the Google Pixel Services). I do not know why this is bundled, but it has a higher version code than the official apk from google, so it cannot be reinstalled using aurorastore to get the official apk. I assume that this is the reason why Gcam crashes on startup

I already tried Aurora Store’s Spoof Manager to update Pixel Camera Services and install Pixel Camera, but it always instantly closes. I’ve granted all permissions.

Hello.
I’d like to switch to IODE, but not be able to use Gcam stops me.
Take a look at this link (GitHub - lukaspieper/Gcam-Services-Provider: App faking only the absolute necessary Apis to use Gcam without Play Services), maybe you’ll find a clue.

Yeah, this is dodgy. I always mitigate stuff like that by revoking all internet permissions from the app (which I did even when I was using the actual google camera app on CalyxOS).

I’m checking with the devs. An initial speculative guess is that it has to do with our Android Auto stub to facilitate getting AA up and running?

For this you need to grant WhatsApp a raft of permissions such as SMS, etc. so it can send the account registration notification (then you can remove them after you get registered). Start a new thread if you can’t get this sorted.

This one is needed to replace the google photo dependency if you already have microg like in iodeOS. Comming from CalyxOS, there was an equivalent called GCamPhotoPreview (CalyxOS / platform_external_calyx_GCamPhotosPreview · GitLab).
But not having this do not make Gcam crash, it only breaks the gallery preview after taking a shot.

@rik, would it be possible to get an official guide for how to install the official Google Camera onto Pixel devices at some point (or some kind of fix to allow Aurora Store to download it)? The build I’m using now is working, but a bit hacky.

Sorry if I’m not following all of the technical back and forth very well. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I do have an inquiry out with the developers as to why we provide the com.google.android.apps.camera.services override making it a bit tricky to (easily) install the actual Google Camera .apk, but with some on August holidays it may take a bit to get a response. Let’s see if I can get some more understanding on this before we would write up a guide to work around this.

Cool beans! The hacky way is good enough for now.
Thanks so much for your help!

Hi @rik, I just thought I’d ping you to see if there were any new solutions available.
It’s not a hot-ticket item or anything, but the hacky approach is… hacky () and a bit glitchy, and installing the official pixel camera would be nice.

Thanks so much!

+1 My experience with mods has been pretty bad. Lens switching does take significantly longer and I get repeated crashes.

I was able to get a somewhat acceptable experience with Gcam_8.8.224V5.0-MWP.apk which I believe I downloaded here.

YMMV, I can’t guarantee it’s a safe .apk, but I just run it with all networking diabled.

Sadly there is no config file for the Pixel 8 Pro on the site for that mod and lens switching is also very slow compared to the original. I think I will use the Graphene Cam until this is resolved

The devs aren’t clear on why this namespace is integrated, it must (possibly) be coming from upstream Lineage. I think we would be able to sort this out, I opened the issue here to track it:

About the preview, yes I stole that from Calyx too on my personal phone (Pixel 7 Pro)

Thanks for raising the issue. Is there any way to follow updates without an account?

I believe you have ot keep checking the issue progress manually: subscribing to updates requires an account, and Iodé don;t allow account creation on their gitlab, which is unfortunate (and quite frustrating, since they said a while ago they were planning to allow it )

Okay then I will just add the URL to my Web Change detection app of choice for now
