I keep/manage my contacts in Outlook on my laptop. Have used DejaOffice for a very long time to migrate the contacts from my computer and only via wired USB sync. (I know: clunk at best and am content to continue doing this unless there is a significantly better option that is secure and clean.)
DejaOffice is listed in Aurora store but not in F-Droid. I like the functionality of DO. I only use the Calendar, Contacts and Memos functions.
How do you determine if an like this is safe from prying eyes, leaking/shedding data by calling “home?”
What am I looking for in the privacy policy, end user policy, etc…?
I’ve gone to all the trouble of flashing my Pixel 9a and want to operate as cleanly as possible and not install any hitchhikers.
Proton Mail: Can someone comment if this is a safe app to install on a DG’d phone? Again, listed in Aurora store, not in F-Droid. I migrated to this a few years ago and it has been my primary email account since.
I haven’t heard back yet to get confirmation if it would work with MS (presumably it would if they use standard CardDAV / CalDAV for contacts and calendars), but DAVx5 is the app you want if so:
I have heard in other conversations that “MS ActiveSync” isn’t supported, but I have yet to understand the scope of what is not possible. I mean email with IMAP seems to work fine, but maybe for calendar, contacts, etc. it will only work with MS tools? So let us know what you find out!
Fossify SMS seems pretty basic unless I’m missing something. So curious about the following additions and security concerns.
Fossify SMS & Keyboard
Is there a safe addition that will integrate .gifs/animations to text messages? I don’t see anything in F-Droid and have searched a bit on the interweb and have come up blank. (Most likely not asking the right search terms.)
Remembering consistently used phrases/words? Is there a toggle somewhere that will allow the keyboard to remember consistently used words, phrases and auto-correct? I absolutely suck at thumb typing.
Is the foregoing type of feature a security risk and therefore not used?
The keyboard we use by default is Heliboard. It is a bit better than the stock AOSP keyboard, and you can add additional dictionaries to it, etc. But I do find the autocorrect lacking (I should look at this more to see if there is anything to do). I know that FUTO keyboard is a fairly popular alternative that you could look at as well.
Regarding “integrating” gifs do you me so you have a gallery of gifs to choose from? I don’t know of anything like that (I am far from an expert here), but of course you can attach any gif you want that you find separately (again noting the size as your MMS size is limited by your carrier).
Overall the clunky-ness of MMS is another reason to try and encourage your closer texting friends / family to move to Signal or another more secure but also more modern solution
Thank you for the insight and potential work around.
I was using Textra app before becoming an iode enthusiast. Textra has a built in search function titled “GIF”. I’m assuming this goes out either to the internet or some repository for GIFs, integrating these seamlessly within the apps core function.
The app has all of the functionality I would use and it’s not a Gapp. I originally found it searching for alternative text apps that would “safe.” It’s listed in Aurora store, not FDroid. I don’t think it is open source.
Under the Plexus App (from F-Droid), I see recent reports that Textra gets a Gold rating for a Pixel 3 & 8 user under LineageOS for microG (iodé’s sibling ). So go ahead and try it, in fact I may try it too
