LOS has recently dropped support for Samsung Note 9 (I’m using it). So I was looking for a replacement and decided to give iodéOS a try. Well, I like it, especially the look and the tracker blocker. However, will iodé continue supporting Samsung Note 9 or? Since LOS, on which iodéOS is based, has stopped supporting it.
iodé is committed to officially supporting the devices we do support as long as possible for reasons of sustainability. It will, however, probably stay on the same version of android.
That said, vulnerabilities continue to be found in technologies as they age, and once an OEM abandons a device, security risks may increase, meaning there is a potential trade-off between ecology and security. But not everyone’s security needs are the same, and you should have the choice.
Are there any former politicians working at iode?
You can’t do anything with statements like that
I’m sorry, but it had to be said
Never held public office ,-)
Each device supported will take development time, meaning loss of time to work on other things, so it’s best not to promise support until the project is more mature and the team is bigger.
That sounds to me that iode will continue supporting the device where possible, not depending on whether LOS still supports the said device or not, which to me is good. At least there’s still a chance that my device will continue be supported, although no guarantees.
Thank you.
You can recognise that it is an accurate description of the current situation. There is not a clear ‘Yes / No’ answer to the original question. Pretending that there is such an answer is what dishonest politicians do. Most issues are nuanced and complicated, not black and white.
Here are some examples of devices which support has been dropped by lineage but continue to receive updates on iodé:
Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) (a5y17lte)
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) (a7y17lte)
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (crownlte)
Samsung Galaxy S9 (starlte)
Samsung Galaxy S9+ (star2lte)
Sony Xperia XZ1 (poplar)
Teracube 2E (2e/emerald)
Xiaomi Mi 9 (cepheus)
Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite (monet)
so yeah, we’ll do our best.
Hopefully one day OEM device manufacturers will be forced by law to open source all the hardware and software they abandon support for, meaning any interested party can extend security and useability and bring old hardware back to life
