In some hotels, to connect to their wifi, you have to select their wifi with a password and then you are redirected to their website where you have to enter your credentials (name and room number, or wifi network and password).
With my FP5, it doesn’t work, even when von disconnected.
As @doudoune144 mentioned, it usually works with different browsers. For me works usually Brave. DuckDuckGo on the other hand not so well. And of course, you have to make the “other” browser the main one to be opened when prompt occurs.
I also know the problem from free WLANs. You don’t always get to the login page reliably. But I don’t want to have to change the default browser for this.
The general problem is that “https” websites (as all “normal” websites should be) and vpns only communicate over a secure tunnel, but if the tunnel isn’t able to be established then you can’t pass data.
The simple answer if you ever have trouble with a captive portal being detected is you can always go to “http://httpforever.com/” and it will then redirect you to the login page (you may need to have your VPN off for this, but once connected re-establish your VPN connection).
Thank you for your answers. I changed my default web browser to Chromium for this case. And then it worked.
Usually I don’t like to connect to public wifi without my VPN on.
What is the risk to connect without VPN, and then directly after the connection, to switch on the VPN?
In practice, what you are doing is registering with their wifi system so your device is known to them (but by default this is done with a randomized MAC). Personally I don’t object to this: if I am using their wifi then I expect I can’t be fully insulated from their security / authentication policies.
Note that with the iodé app you can view what network traffic happens between you connecting to authenticate without the VPN, and then connecting the VPN so you can see who was contacted (but this would just report on it, only blocking known advertising or trackers by default).
The most secure way to move around would be to have your own trusted “Mi-fi” device and not use hotel / coffee shop wifi.
