hi all, having a few questions i am hoping someone can point this lost person the right direction. okay the question first, in short i am trying to find something that tells me about what the icons at the top of the screen mean.
I have never had any android phone before, I am very new to all of this. I have a Brax3 phone which came with iodeOS on it by default. so far it is been very good experience, of course i don’t have a lot of demands on my phone, not a gamer, nor have i ever used social media (i don’t think topic driven forums count in that) so. I may not be putting many demands on the phone or the OS but as my primary need is to have privacy and control it wins! thanks to anyone and everyone who has helped. and thanks to anyone how may be able to help me in my time of need.

I had been in your position, too, and thought, why don’t they deliver instructions with it just like they did with any video recorder or printer? There used to be a manual that gave terms to all of the different switches and displays and … on the device.
Did not find one, sadly. Would be a very cool feature for any newby!
What you talk about is called the “top bar”. You could make a screenshot and post it here, so we could help you.
Well, Not easy in it’s generality. But : on the left you generally see notifications from apps (be that meanders: a new messages has arrived, to long running “service" apps, that need to put a notification up so as to not being killed)
On the right it’s mostly system state. Battery charge, network status (mobile as well as wlan), and probably more (Bluetooth headset and so on)
Maybe you post a screenshot for more specific answers
(Disclaimer: at the moment I’m not using an iode phone)
thank you both. now i know that they are notifications or services or apps running that helps. i recognized some of them but some of these have me stumped. and opening the notifications section really has not given me a clue. these on this screen shot have gone away but still do’nt know what they where.
Welcome @dwayne! We were all new to smartphones once, and the interface also keep changing over time. So getting and giving help back and forth is by no means something any of us are not in need of from time to time 
The right side are your mobile network strength, your wifi strength, and your battery. So those are probably a bit more intuitive.
The left side (let’s ignore the clock ) is where @klic was noting they are notifications, and that you comment on too. The ones that look like a “download arrow in a computer box” are app updates that were installed (or still installing) from either Aurora (“apps from the Play store”) or F-Droid (open-source apps). The dot at the end just means there are more notifications hiding there (maybe more app updates?) When new you will get lots of app updates at the beginning since it has the old system image from the factory and all the bits need updating.
Now to your “folder” icon, this may be that you have a SD card plugged in?
But for all of those when you do the swipe down you see the full detail of each of those “notifications”. You can swipe to the side on any of those pulled down ones to dismiss them.
It will give you options to mute some of them if you want, but before doing that it may be good to just keep individually swiping them away if they aren’t needed so you can be familiar with how they work and what they are generally telling you about.

thank you very much @rik that makes perfect sense. i do have an SD card in. the folder and one of the updates indicators hang around after i cleared the notifications but I rebooted the phone and they went away. so far all is consistent with that the three of you have told me. the dot is good to know as well. extra thanks goes to you @klic and @MissPiggy for your help in getting me started.
