TTS for CoMaps / Organic Maps?

For CoMaps / Organic maps, the default system-wide TTS engine can be used for voice navigation. RHVoice is the one written up by Organic Maps but it is quite “robotic” and doesn’t cover a large number of languages, but it does work.

@laneb did have a good suggestion to use SherpaTTS, the voices really do sound good. But my experience so far is that it is “buggy at best” to get it working as the system-wide TTS that works with CoMaps / Organic Maps.

Wondering if others have gotten SherpaTTS to work or have other suggestions besides RHVoice?

I use SherpaTTS in Magic Earth not Osmand for the system warnings ‘Mind your speed’ etc and that works fine. No other usage

OK good to know it works for you, I will test OSMand. But CoMaps / Organic weren’t recognizing SherpaTTS, reporting “voice navigation unavailable”. I did fake it out once by setting RHVoice as the system TTS, then opening CoMaps, then enabling voice navigation, then go back to system settings and swap TTS engines.

Let me work on this a bit more, it may be user error, but others are free to report success first :slight_smile:

I’ve installed SherpaTTS with OsmAnd but keep getting “unable to start text to speech engine” error? Is this possibly due to something I’m missing with the set up/permissions - or is it a random error or issue like those described above?

Further to above I also tried RHVoice with OsmAnd and same issue. Can’t see any obvious permission issues either. I have Organic Maps installed as well and will try both TTS with that tonight. Then will re-enable/re-install CoMaps to try if needed.

Haven’t tried TTS with non-map app yet to try and identify if issue is the TTS apps, or OsmAnd. Something else for tonight…

Just for completeness I now have SherpaTTS working fine with both OsmAnd~ and Organic Maps - I had multiple issues, and errors, as described in post linked below, and then it came right and just started working… (I will also test with CoMaps too for completeness next couple of days):

Thanks for the testing and the followup, I haven’t been motivated enough to get TTS working as I don’t have a use case for it currently, but I would like to narrow down why I had problems setting up SherpaTTS (with matching errors that you reported, the app kept closing, etc), as that seems like the obvious choice. I’ll probably get back to re-testing it in the somewhat near future too :slight_smile:

No worries rik. I will keep playing around. I expect to have my BraX3 in use as my daily driver from Monday and that will include regular use in my car with AA each day. So I will post feedback here if I observe anything else or have issues (or even just if it’s working fine after a week’s use), etc…
