Sony XZ3 no mobile network (emergency calls only)

Just installed iodéOS on a Sony XZ3. All works great but i’ve got no mobile network. The sim is recognised and i’ve tried manual connecting to a mobile network but no joy. Sounds like this might be common with custom roms so other than trying a different rom altogether i’m a little stuck as how to get my mobile sim to work.
Kind regards to all.

I have a Sony XZ2 and mobile data works fine, I don’t think that your problem has something to do with custom roms.
Did you check the APN settings and network settings?

Hi.Thanks. Yes i have been all over these and for whatever reason my sim won’t work, can’t connect to my mobile network (see sim, identifies sim, sees imei number but there is no mobile network) and no amount of manually editing APN settings and checking network settings fixes that. It all worked on the stock rom that was on the XZ3 and the sim works in other phones but does not work now I’ve put iodéOS on this phone. It’s a shame as everything else works great but without access to my mobile network it’s obviously not much use to me.

Can you confirm what version of Android was on the device before installing iodé? The Lineage instructions note you need to be on Android 10 before installing: Install LineageOS on akatsuki | LineageOS Wiki

But they also mention only specific hardware revisions of the device will work. So look through those full instructions to see if there is some guidance there that may help sort this out.

Hi. Thanks for replying.
I was very thorough in checking compatibility and that my revision was included and did indeed start from an android 10 base.
At some point I’ll put the 10 base back via Sony’s tools and try an alternative.
Many thanks.

I wonder if your ISP has blacklisted the device? I wasn’t certain if you had this specific device active on the cellular network before flashing iodé, or maybe it is a “new to you” device, or maybe a “used to work but that was 2 years ago it has been sitting in a drawer for the past 2 years” device?

Hi Thanks. Actually this is a new old stock phone. Having gone back and reinstalled the stock android 10 rom and then installed IodeOS again to find the same issue still exists I now believe this is a VoLTE issue (IodeOS lists VoLTE as enabled but it isn’t). Going to try another different mobiile network sim as this might end up being mobile network specific (Smarty, UK). Thanks for your input.

VoLTE is definitely working on iodé, but maybe there is a device specific issue. @petefoth I don’t suppose you own this device and/or can report on Smarty working (or not) in the UK?

I don’t own one of these, but I have an XZ2 Compact which uses the same hardware platform. I can check whether VoLTE works with the SIM’s I own - YourCoop,an MVNO using EE, and GiffGaff, and MVNO using O2. I donlt have access to a SMARTY SIM. Which netwrok do they re-sell?

I will have a look in the next day or two (sorry, life is busy at the moment)

With my Xperias (XZ1, XZ1Compact), I have sometimes needed to temporarily drop to a lower “G” network (i.e. 2G, 3G) until an Edge (“E”) connection is made. After that, returning the setting to 4G establishes the 4G connection (and thus VoLTE capability). Usually this workaround is only required again in exceptional network coverage conditions (for me).

There’s a setting in Xperia Parts, one of the ROM’s mobile settings categories where you can enable this “network shuffle” to run automatically at startup.

(According to Wikipedia, SMARTY uses ThreeUK’s network.)

I can confirm that VoLTE (and VoWiFI, and Mobile Data) works on XZ2 Compact, using with the GffGaff SIM on the O2 network.

Good to know. I have ordered a GiffGaff sim to check that out.

Just an update. The lack of 4g Volte was entirely mobile network related. Smart (Three) in the UK never supported the phone and clearly just block it’s use in their network. Tried GiffGaff (O2) and no troubles at all. A pig as I really don’t want to move mobile providor so now have to think about using a phone that works on their network or (more likely) use as is and keep a “dirty phone” for apps that only run via Google Play.
