Just saw it today on nostr, what are your thoughts?
In general, what should one make of an anonymous comment, whether it is critical or well-intentioned?
The allegations are serious, but if they can’t be conclusively proven, they only serve to damage GrapheneOS’s reputation.
When GrapheneOS (GOS) introduced the sandbox feature, I immediately stopped using GOS and haven’t reinstalled it since. What I can confirm from my earlier experience with GOS is a zero-tolerance policy toward criticism, even constructive criticism.
Well, I can attest to point 4 personally. They have a discord channel where they monitor hacker news and reddit for GrapheneOS “misinformation” (and mind you they consider opinions misinformation too) and then they send their discord lemmings to brigade the thread. It’s weird as hell.
anonymous or not it changes nothing imo
Knowing the source of the information is absolutely essential to me, because anyone can spread nonsense and false reports—and the web is full of fake news.
ok
While it is fair to have an open and respectful discussion to evaluate iodé in relation to alternatives, having a thread only about another OS / ROM with only an anonymous source of some comments that are written in a such a confrontational tone without the chance for those being accused to reply is just inviting a flame war, and that would be very bad for us and for the accused, with the ultimate “losers” being all of us (especially the users of both projects).
I doubt it would go well on their forum to post there either, but I don’t think this is the place for it either. Sorry.
I am going to mark this post as the “solution” so it will be seen as part of the top post to avoid others just starting at the top from piling on replies that may further fuel a possible flame war
The first and second points are especially funny considering Graphene OS Devs also once insinuated that Iodé OS and /e/ OS may be funded by the French government and that there might be State backdoors
. I guess it’s Fight of the custom ROMs
Anyway, I do agree that they’re unnecessarily harsh in their response to criticism or even mere suggestions. Maybe Micay is autistic
. They also always attack any alternative ROM (like iodéOS) as insecure whenever the alternative is recommended on Twitter. As if they want to be a monopoly in custom ROMs
Whatever….
As for “paying Google” for devices, my wife and I have 5 Google Pixel devices, all bought second hand, one bought through the Iode store BTW, and therefore we haven’t paid a cent to Google for these devices.
