In a bit of an effort to better organize this site, with a focus on making it more accessible for newcomers while also not restricting existing users, I am working through some site adjustments.
Site “Homepage Default View” Change
First, the default view is to have the “latest” posts on the right be organized by the category they are posted under (previously the right side would show the latest posts across all categories).
For experienced users that want “the old way” to see latest posts across all categories as was the default before, you can simply tap the “Latest” in the navigation banner. If you would like to modify your individual default so that you always see “Latest” when you come to the homepage, in your account “Preferences > Interface > Default Home Page” you can select “Latest”.
HowTo Guides Sub-category
I have added a “HowTo Guides” sub-category for contributors to write up how they solve various tasks or overcome challenges. Posts created here default to being in “wiki format” meaning other users can edit and update the lead post. Changes are tracked and can be reverted in case any updates are not helpful.
App Compatibility Sub-category
Next, I have split apart the “App Compatibility” tables into broad sections and assigned them to a sub-category so they can easily be seen all together.
All of the posts in that section are “wiki editable” by users. As these lists get “stale” as new versions of the apps or the system may cause changes to the compatibility rating, please look through them and contribute as you are able. If you are not comfortable editing the main tables, simply leave a reply with the needed change and someone will assist with the table update.
Issue Tracker
Next, I have created a new “Issues” category. Currently our gitlab issue tracker is not available for user registration, as we don’t have the admin capacity to manage issue discussions and oversight there as well as here (and many users would not want to register for accounts in both places). Maybe as we grow we would be able to open this up, but for now you can at least now better hilight an issue you are experiencing by creating a post under this new “Issues” category here. Posts will be moved from “Issues” to “Issues-Closed” (with an appropriate tag) by moderators as they are processed.
If you are unsure about if you are experiencing a bug or are needing to discuss a bit more with other users about a system component or app, then do not create an “Issues” post, but instead post in the “System and Apps” category as is currently done.
Disclaimer: As it is essential to keep this “Issues” category streamlined for more effectively assisting our development team, moderators reserve the right to edit, re-word, re-organize, or re-categorize posts made to the Issues category.
