Shift6mq: echo in Voicecalls

Hi there,

I am using iode 6.11 on a Shift6mq. Since switching to iode my phone partners have an echo in the conversation, when I call them via Threema or Signal. For me the sound is normal. This echo does not occur in a cellular call.

Since I did not encounter this behaviour on the same device with the OS I had before (Shift OS 3 L), I assume it has something to do with iode.

Has anyone an idea how I can fix this?
Thanks in advance!

PD: Maybe the topic is related to: https://community.iode.tech/t/moto-g32-echo-cancellation/

Can you clarify if the echo issue for the recipient is consistent in these 3 situations?

  • using “held to your ear” normal call speaker
  • using video call (so on “phone loudspeaker”)
  • using a headset

Also, can you confirm that this issue exists for other recipients as well?

Tested both with Threema and Signal with different recipients:

  • “held to your ear” normal call speaker: Yes, echo (recipient hears himself twice)
  • video call “phone loudspeakter”: no echo and recipient can’t hear me at all
  • headset: no echo, works as expected

OK thanks for the tests. The “phone loudspeaker” calls not using your mic seem like possibly a “AppInfo > Permissions” issue, or possibly inside the app’s settings?

I did a search and found this unresolved but closed LineageOS bug report: Shift6mq (axolotl) doesn't have echo cancellation on loud speaker voip calls (#5854) · Issues · LineageOS / issues / android · GitLab

So it may be related to the LineageOS port, in that case it may be that the next step would be to go to the Shift forum and see if there are any discussions on this, or possibility of submitting a ticket to them: https://forum.shiftphones.com/

Did you purchase direct from Shift?

I can confirm the reported issue. I didn’t notice it because I use to make Signal calls with BT headset. So I tested this issue in my last call.

With Shiftphone I made the same disappointing experience as with iodé: They don’t feel responsible for LineageOS bugs. The Shiftphone staff member, that maintains the LineageOS ROMs in his free time is busy with working on the OS for their new phone. So maintanance on the SHIFT6mq LineageOS ROM is very unlikely. And there are no reactions on issues created on Github.

OT: The only reason why I don’t buy lifetime iodé Premium is that I don’t know how long it will be usable on my phone without proper maintenance.
