Samsung s10e: to flash, or not to flash

A long time Xperia Compact user (XZ1 and XZ2 both), I decided it’s time to move on and try something else. (My XZ1c has weird problems operating abroad, and my XZ2c was too unreliable mechanically, with frequent screen replacement necessary, and eventually touch sensitivity broke entirely.)

I got my hands on a refurbished Samsung s10e (beyond0lte), which I see is officially supported both by LineageOS and iodé. I understand Samsung offers less open-device support than others so I’m thinking twice before committing to flashing this device and hope to benefit from any experience others have with it, positive or negative.

If I understand correctly, neither VoLTE nor VoWiFi will work at all on the s10e, regardless of whether or not the network provider ever supported this device. Anyone know if that’s actually true?

I guess I need to maximize the s10e’s usefulness /as a phone/. If flashing a LineageOS-based ROM like iodé’s going to impact that negatively, I may need to consider staying with stock.

Yes it’s true.

To clarify, Samsung has disabled VoLTE on any custom ROM so yes, if you need 4G+ calling and you actually want your phone “to phone” then you may need to stay with stock. Sorry.

Thanks, I guess I already suspected as much but it’s better to have confirmation. I think something like the Pixel 4a will suit me much better, then, as far as iodé goes.

Pixel 4a is a good choice but being experienced with flashing a lot of s10e devices and running it as a daily driver I think it’s still a viable device to flash iode/L4M on it. Call quality is ok and most of my calls I make through internet are not affected by that proprietary VoLTE drivers. Love the form factor of both devices but the s10e is way cheaper than 4a at least in my area. That made the cut for me.

just my 2 cents :victory_hand:

Yes you can go down the SIP route (in North america, jmp.chat is a good service), but in the US if you want any cellular calls it has to support VoLTE unfortunately :frowning: . Not sure, but it seems that @uninterpolated is in a location that needs VoLTE (unless again they want to use SIP as their primary voice call option).

Note that with either option, SIP or JMP.chat (which is actually XMPP; U.S./Canada numbers only), you’ll still need a source for the internet connection, e.g. wifi, a regular carrier SIM/eSIM, or a roaming data-only SIM/eSIM. JMP (Soprani.ca), in addition to their cheap JMP.chat service (calls/SMS/MMS over the internet) can sell you a non-expiring, rechargeable data-only SIM or eSIM for multiple regions of the world (without the obligation to subscribe to JMP.chat).

I’ve found JMP.chat plus a data SIM to be so good that I’ve ditched my regular mobile carrier… even though I do possess a VoLTE-capable phone that’s usable on T-mobile USA. Now I can roam with my JMP account on multiple networks as needed, even overseas, with no need for VoLTE.

I really liked the form factor of the S10e, but maximum support for phone functionality including VoLTE and VoWiFi is just too important to me to overlook. I have had weird cellular call problems in other EU countries as well as in the US, so I want to maximize support for regular phone tech while still running iodé. From the dimensions the Pixel 4a looks pretty close to the S10e and the apparently superior support of this device by iodé is hard to ignore.

I cannot believe the Pixel 4a does not have an SD card slot. What kind of Android phone has no SD card slot?

All Pixel devices have no SD card slot, Google wants the data in their cloud…

Yeah, I see that now. Bummer. I never imagined any Android device had no removable storage support.

Now I’m out of ideas. I need a replacement for my Xperia compacts, without being too much larger (should still be under 6”) and with LineageOS & VoWiFi/VoLTE support,

I use a Sony Xperia 5V (pdx237) in place of my XZ1 Compact and XZ2 Compact. It’s taller and a bit heavier but not noticeably wider. Performance and battery life are noticeably better.

It has an SD card slot but no headphone socket.

Officially supported by LineageOS and LineageOS for microG. Regular unofficial builds of IodéOS.

Oh gosh, I went down that way too.

The S10e would be the perfect device with excellent hardware (sd card slot/2nd sim, headphone jack, wireless charging, handy form factor) but samsung fucks it up with proprietary code and no option to relock bootloader. It’s just sad. I stayed with those devices because I couldn’t find any comparable ones.

Is there actually a way to ask/pressure Samsung to release those drivers and make it publicly available? Hard to imagine, I know.

I actually read about a guy reverse engineering these drivers is that true?

Looks good but hell yeah that’s an expensive one.

One point that lead me to buy beyond devices is the price. You get them from around 50-150 €.

Pixel 4a are much rarer and therefore more expensive, at least in Germany.

Refurbed.de has some at the moment in that price range. That’s where I got mine. They’re only of “Good” condition, though, not “Very good” or “Excellent”..
