I would like to root my second-hand Pixel 7a and install Iode OS. However, I am currently facing the following issue: OEM unlocking is not working. In the developer options, OEM unlocking is grayed out and therefore not clickable. See screenshot:
Enabling USB debugging and checking in fastboot mode. Fastboot indicates: locked. The command: “fastboot flashing unlock” does not work and returns an error.
Performing a factory reset twice
Downloading updates (Android 15)
Installing a SIM card
On several other forums, I read that people have to wait 7 days or longer before the OEM unlocking option becomes available. This is said to be a security measure by Google.
Resetting developer options. “Clear storage” in the settings app.
Does anyone have any other ideas on what I can try?
thx but when I follow the Lineage manual and type “sudo fastboot flashing unlock” I get the error: FAILED (remote: ‘flashing unlock is not allowed’)
fastboot: error: Command failed.
I am running adb version 35.0.2
The OEM unlocking option remains grey (cannot click on it). Should I get a different phone at this point?
My first attempt was OEM unlocking without a Google account. When that did not work I added a Google account. I honestly dont know at this point. I find it very hard to find a proper source for this.
I worry that if I remove the Google account now I have to wait 7 days again.
I filled in my IMEI on this website: https://store.google.com/us/repair?hl=en-US and it is telling me I have a Verizon phone. That means the bootloader is locked and probably not going to be unlocked. So now I am going to sell my phone and look for a different Pixel 7 or 7a
Yes, sadly there is nothing (easy) that can be done with a vendor-locked device (all Verizon devices ). Sorry this wasn’t known to you before buying it.
If you are in the USA (I am guessing so, considering the Verizon device), then I highly recommend www.swappa.com Make sure to filter by vendor: unlocked to ensure you get a device that is possible to install iodé (or any custom rom) on.
Thanks for the suggestion and the link. I was never expecting to run into a Verizon phone since I am from Amsterdam, Netherlands. So far, no luck finding a second-hand Pixel 7a because phone retailers and private sellers have no clue what I am asking when I say, “Is your phone OEM unlocked?” or “Can I have the IMEI to check if it’s OEM unlockable?”
