Phone donation to Iode

Hello,

Is it possible to make a phone donation at IodeOS company ? And how ?

It seems the bottom part of my screen doesn’t work anymore. I read it could be due to software issue, so I reseted the phone (factory) . The problem is still there, I went to see a phone repairer who told me it was definitely the screen… and it d cost me around 200€ to set a new screen, as I’m not anymore able to do it myself. It’s fine when you know a pixel 6 screen may cost around 80€

As I’ve become lazy and fat, and that I don’t live nearby Shenzen. I won’t have the patience to repair it myself.

So, can I make a donation here, or shall I give my phone to recycle somewhere else if they don’t destroy it ?

Thx for tips and support

I’ll check with the team, but I don’t think they would be able to use it. I am not sure where you are located, but in the US, for example, there are tech donations places such as Free Geek Twin Cities that may accept mobile device donations.

Ok. Thank you for your help.

I was more located around Europe.

So, I watch a few tutos online, and I bought a new screen set from a quite random online shop, for less than 50€. I got help from a friend of a friend as the tools given with the screen were quite useless. The hardest was maybe to find the hairdryer to heat the phone surface.

Now, the screen of the phone is fixed. It’s not an offical one anway that’ll hopefully give it more 3 years to this phone.

Google gave it 5 years of official updates for this model(2021), so we can hope much more with LineageOS.

Cheers.

Great news! How about the fingerprint sensor? I have heard those are hard to get working well with cheap screen replacements. I am curious as I have a P6 screen repair for a family member in my future (it is cracked but still fully functional at the moment

Regarding future updates, I still have a few Pixel 3a XL (not now my main device but it could be, still performant enough) that I build iodé 6.x builds for and they work great. So yes I do expect you will get at least 3 more years for the Pixel 6, but I suspect maybe 5 (or more) years of Lineage / iodé updates.

I’ve seen in many tutos about the fingerprint replacement as it is one of the operation to process, and also it’s automatical reprogramming through the fastboot interface…

There are screens which don’t have the fingerprint junction at the back of it. I believed also at start all screens came with the fingerprint connection by default. There are different qualities also of screens, and my purchase was pretty economic…

Anyway, I don’t use that feature, and I’d better avoid to put some more nutella on my screen… I can also choose not to lock my phone or to put a pin / pattern on it.

As for the fingerprint, you can always test your “bought” screen and give it back if you don’t take off the warranty tag of your screen.

Hope all will work for the best on your side.

// // If you don’t have an official hardware for your phone, some of your apps that needs a genuine system won’t work (ex banking apps )

// // I didn’t do it, and I don’t know it, but you may need to switch back to an Android Google OS so as to update the proper fingerprint driver (to verify) and then switch to IodeOS…

Usually you have to transfer the fingerprint sensor from the original screen to the new one. But then it should work. Also, not sure about the standard pixels, but don’t get third party screens for the Pro Pixels, they are junk and not fit for purpose. The bezels are significantly larger, and punch hole for the camera is very large, and the screen is very unresponsive. High refresh rate does not work, if you have it enabled, it causes the screen to get stuck at 30hz… Also the screens are far lower res than the original.
They are cheap for a reason. At least for the 7 Pro, I couldn’t find a good quality aftermarket screen for it, they also seem to be rebranded versions of the £30 aliexpress screens. The genuine screens cost £180 but you can buy the entire phone used in good condition £150 or even less sometimes. Just something to keep in mind, with third party screens you often sacrifice quality and usability, and sometimes lose features.
Also something strange that happens on the Pixel 7 pros we have that have the knockoff screens - it seems to have a 50/50 chance whether installing an android software update will fail. Sometimes it will work first time, other times it fails multiple times in a row. This is something we noticed on almost all the ones with knockoff screens, but the ones with genuine screens work every time. Keeping in mind these are all stock, I don’t know if this would be an issue on Iode, Graphene, etc or not.

Uh oh, I am in that boat on my P7P daily driver. The screen glass itself is not damaged, but I had a tempered glass protector (curved), and on one drop, I think the pressure of how the protector wrapped around the curve of the screen caused a black spot that then spread and now covers the right ??1cm?? of the bottom 2/3 of the screen. All touch interaction works, but I have to guess a bit on what is on the side of the screen below the black section. You can see the sort of “circle” on the affected side in the middle, something in the drop must have pressed really hard there damaging the lcd pixels?)

yeah, you’ll either have to deal with low quality aftermarket screen, overpriced OEM screen, or maybe find a dead P7P that happens to have a good screen and swap the screens over?

Well, I solved the problem with new high quality aftermarket screen on my Pixel 5 by ordering through Alibaba directly from manufacturer in Shenzen. It was around 90€ for screen, included ribbon cable, speaker and finger print sensor. Refresh rate 90hz, original PPI count, no scratches on the glass. Perfectly plug and play ready. So it was easy repair - heat up the glue, lift and separate screen, unplug the ribbon cable from screen and battery, plug in new screen, test it and reassemble phone back by new glue/sealing precut tape. It all took me CCA 20 minutes. So now phone is like new one. The delivery from China to EU took CCA 7 days after placing order.

Glad to read the good news! I already purchased an aftermarket screen from a business supplier that I have access to through my personal company, https://openmobile.us but when it came it was damaged. So I am waiting for a replacement for the replacement.

The pain for these newer Pixels is that I understand the aftermarket ones may have very slow responsiveness (not honoring the full refresh rate which is crazy on these devices: 120Hz … I really don’t think I need it  ) or have washed out colors, or only last for a few months at best. Plus these stupid curved screens! Argh!

Anyway, hoping the business supplier maybe has slightly better offerings than the ones I can find on Amazon etc. I’ll certainly let you know, hopefully I have a good report like you just gave  I am also putting in a new replacement battery while it is opened up, so if the display is good this could be a usable device for several years to come.

Hope the second display will be OK. The quality and state of the display units sold for the purpose of aftermarket repair REALLY differ. And that is the reason I buy these directly from manufacturer through Alibaba. Because on that platform you can find almost anything a factory can produce. In crazy amount of quality, amount, price levels and many other factors. Firstly it feels a bit overwhelming. But you can sort it out by parameters you seek for and than you are connected directly to the manufacturer, usually via chat. And they response almost instantly. And if you make a deal, everything just flies. And usually the price is WAY easier on your wallet in comparison to your local supplier (whou usually purchased also from China the same way described).
