Hello everyone,
Intro - I installed iode OS only 3d ago on a brand new Google Pixel 7a. Coming from an iPhone 11.
Till not long ago I was what some call a FanBoy of Apple products but after watching several info video on different YouTube channel, a lot from Rob Braxman, I changed my mind very quickly.
I could not wait till March 2025, or longer, to wait for a Brax3 phone, so I decided to buy a new but older Pixel model (due to $ restrictions)
I used to automated install, as I don’t know anything about programming, and was happy to see it all went well from the first attempt.
Furthermore I installed Linux Mint on my older Macbook Pro from 2013
As I already bought an Apple watch 10, I now will have to sell it.
And that leads to my question of today.
Will there be an on board AI for iode OS ?
I really really like the voice commands on iPhone and Apple watch as well the voice to text integration for email, iMessage, notes, reminders.
Yesterday I tested the Voice control and voice to text on my Apple serie 10 without any connection to an iPhone, nor WiFi, nor BT whatsoever as I was in nature from of it all. And I have to say I was impressed by how much and how well I could use the watch like that.
Ok, I can not receive any notifications as that comes from the iPhone BUT …
I can raise my wrist and start talking commands like ; putting a timer, an alarm, a reminder in time, dictate a longer text, control the volume when playing music.
Like that is all possible on a small watch I’m sure it should not be a problem to put it on a DeGoogled phone.
(You see that now already in other watches like Garmin Fenix 8, Galaxy watch, Amezefit.)
I really would like to see this, sooner then later , integrated in iode OS
Something else too
I would like a setting where I not only can block the camera’s (front and back together) but rather seperate from each other. Meaning you can activate/block the camera’s independent from each other.
Sorry, I must have missed that in a video but I’ve must say that I do not see the problem for it when totally on device only !?
As comparison with the access on the watch - 100% off line, zero connection to anything, even working inside a Faraday cage - you have access to the full dictionary that you loaded on the device ( I forgot to mention in previous statement that the translator also works) And you can use it for all uses I mentioned before.
If I remember correctly I saw several video titles on R.Braxman channel indicating he’s working on a private AI on his laptop.
Sure, and I can understand what you are asking for, but when I read your initial post, what I heard was…
Wow, I really like iode, but I wish it were more like iOS
I really hope that isn’t iode’s goal.
So, with AI, do you understand that it’s not really just on the local device? Even the latest iPhone 16, with it’s new local AI engine, still offloads in layers, based on the complexity of any given task? And that becomes the threat. An honestly, how would any typical user know what is/is not staying local?
The fact is that one really knows very little about what AI is doing (or being commanded to do). It’s an entity unto itself, embedded within your device, and has eyes and ears to eveything you see, type, talk, and even things you do not (did you see the part about the IR sensor, for near-presence sensing ?). It could invalidate nearly every measure of security and encyption you put in place to protect your confidentiality, because it’s right there at the source.
I imagine that at some point in time you will probably get your wish, but I envision it as something more like “Good AI vs Evil AI” where one type protects you from the other. Who knows… it’s still early.
It is not that I want iode OS to become iOS at all !
Yes, I did watch several video on the iPhone 16
And yes I am aware of the scam and lies about the Safty and privicy of the on device AI on iPhone.
Neverthless I think it should not be very complicated for programmers these days with the tools that they have to make it so that we can install a 100% secure only local on device tool.
To be clear I’m not talking about a full functional research AI tool !!!
I’m talking about dictation, translation and voice commands.
All I mentioned what’s now already possible on an apple Watch 10 when not at all connected (Yes, I needed an Apple ID to set it up but further than that it’s not more connected to the iPhone nor BT nor to internet) During the initial setup I also downloaded the different languages that I wanted to use for the voice assist and the translator. This should easily be possible on a phone.
NB; Beside Rob Braxman’s channel I also recommend ‘Naomi Brockwell’ and ‘The hated One’ and ‘David Bombal’
When you say the above, do you mean that you don’t see AI as a threat, or do you mean that those “advertising AI as amazing” (like Apple) are misleading the public?
So, I’m not a developer but I do have a heavy background in tech. I also have friends and business associates who are developers. And tech is funny sometimes. Often, what we non-developers think is an easy task, turns into some kind of monumental feat.
In the US we have this TV personality, who just happens to be psychologist. And while I didn’t really follow his show, he has this saying that I liked. I don’t know if he coined it, or what, but it’s spot on:
The best predictor of the future is the past.
If you think about how benign the web once was, or how benign social media started out as, or how benign search engines once where, and what all of that looks like today (I mean iode has an entire OS built around a privacy protecting content search/filter engine), it should make people think hard about where the tech WILL go. If you think about the magnitude of people who not only share their every thought online, but literally diary their entire life existance on their devices, and now your drop an AI on that device… well… that is what cool Hollywood scifi movies are made of.
The reality is that you will probably get it, especially now that Apple has embedded it.
I really hope we don’t get it be default. By all means allow users to install it, but many users will not want or need it. Also, if it is included by default, the Iodé will have to support it, and they already have more than enough to do
Yes indeed, I refer to the nice sounding promotion from apple, BUT certainly not the only company !, all under the fake umbrella of ‘for your safety’, the big lies of on device privacy. Yes, I am well aware of it.
That doesn’t mean it is not possible to have certain AI tools that are safe to use in regard of privacy.
I think all need to follow BUT with full transparency on safety and privacy for AI tools.
If companies are not following the new trends, in a safe way, they will get behind very quick.
I think it is the goal to make the use of our phone safer. Convincing more and more people to change to a better and safer OS will force others big OS players to follow. Quantity of users will then lead to quality. But don’t forget most people want the latest tools.
Sorry but with that reasoning you need to go back to an old non smartphone flip phone or only have a landline.
I think we can have both and new tools can go hand in hand with positive safe privacy. I agree it is maybe hard to believe but don’t forget we are the consumers and we can decide not only for ourself but by doing so we can, when enough in numbers, force companies to change. When we don’t buy their product …
Not sure I follow your logic there as the message in my post is exactly the opposite. The point I’m making is that you may have the latest Screwgle Pixel smartphone in your hand fully loaded with all the latest AI bull$hit, but that doesn’t necessarily make you a ‘smart’ user. Or as Alan Sugar once pointed out… ‘I might know all the words to Candle In The Wind but that don’t make me Elton John’.
