I am not the most “tech” oriented person and I am trying to figure out how the notifications work. In particular I have a notification dot on the iode app icon on my home page. Maybe it’s just me, but I cannot figure out what the notification dot is for. When I open the app there is no indication of what the notification dot pertains to. As far as I know the app is up to date. It is frustrating to see a notification dot on an app icon but no indication as to why? How am I supposed to know why there is a notification dot?
Ok. So I figured out why there is a notification dot on the iode icon on the home page. It is because of the app “Trebuchet.” Every time I use an app, it uses Trebuchet (the launcher). Because of that iode shows a notification dot because of it. If I tap on iode it opens and says something like “Trebuchet is unrecognizable to iode and has never been used.”
So the only way to get rid of the notification is to dismiss it. EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU USE AN APP. I mean really? Does anyone know how to stop this? I have the notifications for Trebuchet turned off but that is no help. It is the iode app that is causing the problem.
I have this Trebuchet notification all the time as well. If anyone can help, I’d be grateful.
I have turned that Trebuchet-hey-I-am-on-and-working-message off, but don’t remember what I did. If you do a long-press on the notification and then use the cog wheel, what are the options you are offered?
First off, long press opens window. Windows states “These notifications can’t be modified.” Press cog takes you to iode notifications and the only setting allowed is “Allow notification dot.” If you tap the notification it opens the iode app which says “ Inactive application.”
I hope you can remember because I have not been able to figure it out.
Well I seem to have figured it out. Go to the iode app settings. Go down to “General Settings.” Select “notifications.” Turn off “display notification.” No more persisting Trebuchet notification.
doesn’t that turn off all display notifications, not only the Trebuchet one?
Yes it does. I have not found any other way to selectively disable that Trebuchet notification. I suppose it comes down to just how worried you are about normal internet usage. Most of the “malicious” recipients are normal cookie type internet connections. They really aren’t inherently malicious. Things like Amazon AWS which is used by thousands of websites to host their site. If you get to wrapped up in trying to block every conceivable cookie and tracker on the internet you’re going to drive yourself crazy.
That said, it would be nice to be able to selectively turn the Trebuchet notification off (in the interest of things working the way they should) but no one has stepped up with a solution so on we go…
Sorry for being repetitive a bit, but to get on the same page let’s start from the beginning.
The way the iodé app works is to just show the currently focused app and any blocking stats for it. It is a bit of an awareness thing so you can see stats for other apps that actually access the internet.
The launcher (Trebuchet) not accessing the internet is what is a bit confusing, but effectively when you see it in the persistent notification it just means you do not have any “real” app active. But as a persistent notification can’t (to my knowledge) be contingently displayed (when using "real apps that go to the internet) or hidden (when no active app except the homescreen / launcher), it shows and it says “Trebuchet” which isn’t known and doesn’t access the internet and it is confusing / misleading.
It was one of my first points of confusion using iodéOS. But since seeing it wasn’t easy to do differently, I first used to turn off the iodé app notifications altogether (as you and others note), but now just leave it on. It used to show an icon in the top bar all the time, now at least it is only seen when pulling down the notification drawer.
Anyway, one proposal I had a while back (but I think it didn’t get a lot of traction) was to basically “hack” the iodé app persistent notification code so that “IF Trebuchet is the active app THEN just show a different message like ‘No active application’” or something like that.
