Mullvad VPN silently closes down. Same for iodé app

I’ve been using Mullvad VPN since I switched to iodé a couple of months ago. It has worked fine, until recently. It’s been persistent both on iodé 7.3 and 7.5.

Mullvad will silently shut down during the night while I’m sleeping, leaving the phone in unintended flight mode until I wake up and restart it. The persistent Mullvad notification is gone*, and the system warning for lost VPN connection (I have Always on VPN enabled) has triggered. I haven’t been able to spot this happening during the day, but that could be explained by me interacting with Mullvad regularly like switching location in-app.

I’ve checked app settings:

App Info > Mullvad VPN > App Battery Usage > Allow background usage = ON

App Info > Mullvad VPN > Manage app if unused = OFF

Apps > Special app access > Unrestricted mobile data > Mullvad VPN = ON

Developer options > Background Process limit = Standard limit

Battery > Battery Saver = OFF

This doesn’t happen on my other phone that uses GrapheneOS.

I notice this easily for Mullvad, but I realized that the same happens for iodé app, which used to run all the time, and then doesn’t. If I start iodé app, the persistent notification reappears, but that disappears again after a while, not sure how long.

Any ideas?

*this is not always the case since 7.5 update, sometimes notification is there but Mullvad isn’t connected, while notification claims it still is

Maybe iodéOS implemented a “subtle digital detox timer”? (joke only, no we didn’t!)

Sorry I don’t have a specific idea about the problem, I think we need to find if others can report it as well (but I am not sure of many using 24x7 VPN?)
