Monkey business

I was having trouble recognising and differentiating emojis, even when I put my glasses on, so somebody on here recently mentioned installing an emoji dictionary and doing that has provided useful hover popups when typing with Heliboard.

The downside is that the suggestion bar is now hijacked by mostly emojis rather than words. And worse, words are frequently autocorrected and turned into emojis. Since most of my messages are in French, common words like ‘pas’ get transformed inexplicably into a monkey. I don’t always notice this and have hence sent some texts only to have to try and explain to the recipient afterwards why I have illogically inserted a monkey into my message. I fear that one day I’m going to insert an accidental aubergine and invite unwanted attentions.

I very much want the emoji descriptions but the suggestions are utterly random and no sane person could ever be mid-sentence and think this is the perfect place to insert a cucumber. How can I disable the latter functionality? I should point out that due to never-explained weirdness I use Heliboard from F-Droid and have had to disable the iodé version.

Sorry don’t know how to advise you, but maybe you want to look at Futo Keyboard, it has more configuration options which may help achieve what you want:

Just as an aside you did dig right into the Heliboard settings inside the app? i only recently discovered how many there were after having been using it for about a month…

Also if you have I currently have the Fossify Keyboard installed for Emoji’s - so they only show up if I switch keyboard, then select the Emoji input on the Fossify KB. This was suggested by several people elsewhere (BraX3 Community IIRC) so is working for me - but isn’t 100% ideal, so i consider it a usable work around in the interim… It’s on F-Droid IIRC.

Ah, found it. Indeed, there are so many settings in Heliboard and I’d somehow not been through the right ones. Under Text Correction there’s an option ‘Suggest emojis’. Setting that to off has resolved the first issue, and whilst I might have thought there’d be an independent setting for the autocorrect, that no longer inserts monkeys or random vegetables either. That one setting has sorted everything out.

Cheers

Alas… no more :cucumber: and :monkey:

P.S. @pierre4l what Emoji dictionary are you using?

P.P.S. You might want to tick the “solved” box on the relevant post if there is the option for this thread too.

I just downloaded the standard English and French emoji dictionaries at the page that somewhere directed me to. I guess it must have been here. And then installed from a file within Heliboard.

Great - Thanks! I will try them out as an alternative to Fossify Keyboard…
