Iode os firewall

Hi,

Re the firewall , I’m using a VPN, choice of 2 actually Proton or Rethink, I’ve found that the firewall blocks these when set as default effectively limiting speed to 30-50 Mbps. When turn off the iode blocker I get a lot higher speed 250 Mbps in both cases. By the way I have 1020tx /1132rx Mbps

If go to per app blocking and turn off for Proton and or Rethink , the blocker still blocks the VPN.

So why can’t I have these app bypass the blocker even though the dashboard says they’re unprotected?

For moment I have the blocker switched off as it is working in the manner it should for me

I’m interested in this too, as I may be getting this issue too.

But I have noticed on my Linux PC that Proton VPN can be randomly slow at times and if I change country I’m connected to its radically faster…

Any thought’s @rik?

I’m tempted to just say “Nope, not at this time  .” But let me try:

It is a bit difficult to mentally conceptualize, but the iodé blocker if enabled for an app that has all its traffic routed through a VPN even though the VPN app itself isn’t blocked seems to me that it is still at risk of slowdown because there is inherent overhead in the blocker checking every network call to see if it should be blocked or not. Even though they all are to the VPN address.

Basically what I may be saying is if you are using a system-wide VPN then during that time the iodé blocker may potentially be useless, right? (since all traffic is identified simply as the VPN address)

It may take a bit more thinking on this to understand better.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for replying.

From the speed test results that you’ve provided, I can see that you’re receiving speeds that are somewhat in the expected range for a VPN connection, especially since you have much higher native ISP speeds than the average user, and the bandwidth has to be distributed, considering how many users need to be connected at the same time.

Additionally, as your entire connection is encrypted to obscure your traffic from third parties, you may naturally see lower speeds than your regular, unencrypted connection.

My advice is to try selecting the WireGuard protocol and enabling the VPN accelerator to see if this will help increase the speeds.
(Me : was set at smart protocol selection, found for me I got slightly lower speed with wireguard , already had VPN accelerator turned on.)

We’ve implemented all of the necessary features and enhancements to maximize VPN speeds on our end, and until breakthroughs in VPN technology (such as WireGuard) are made, there’s unfortunately not much that any VPN provider can do to increase them.

I hope this clears things up.

Kind regards,

Why? Even with a system-wide VPN, all apps are recognized by the Iode Blocker and can be controlled.

Well it depends on if data passes through the VPN before or after the blocker. And of course after I thought about it, you are most certainly correct that traffic of course goes through the blocker before it is then passed to the VPN.

Hello; I am new here and far from me to be unsympathetic, but I made some tests with and without VPN (proton VPN here), and my results are prompting me to say the same as in

I also made a simpler test:

Phone + VPN → 1.7 Mbps

Phone (hotspot) → Tablet + VPN → 18 Mbps

This last easier to reproduce.
