Iode call recording

Hello. I am new to iode. I have been using Grapheneos for years. I learned about iode through Rob Braxman. I have iode on one device and Grapheneos on another. I can easily record calls on this GOS device. Is there a way to do the same with iode? Then I could switch both devices to iode.

We are discussing this option internally as a team. By default it has not been enabled in LineageOS (our upstream) as there are different country regulations that make it illegal to record a phone call with another party without their explicit consent (USA and France are examples of this as I understand).

This said, the reason we are discussing it is that it does seem it should be up to the user to be aware of their country’s regulations and to make their own decision in this regard. We just want to be sure to not be at risk of liability.

Thank you!

I agree it should be up to the user as well. One could use the phone in all kinds of ways that are illegal already.

Certainly. But sometimes logic doesn’t work in the courtroom so we need to make sure before we are dragged there

Hello, I am a happy iode user and have made several installations for friends and family. Good to see that there is finally some activity from devs considering call recording. It is a very handy feature when you have “customer support” calls, the other side is recording anyways. As I wrote in another thread here, AVM does it with their Fritz!phone lineup here in germany. You just have to confirm that everyone who is part of the conversation agrees with an o.k.-button. So at least a big company like AVM can do it without legal problems here in germany. This would really be the last important point on my iode wishlist that is not checked yet.

I created this feature request: Feature Request: enable call recording option (#66) · Issues · ota / issue-tracker · GitLab

This is something I found that may be a possibility for us (referenced it in the issue for devs to further evaluate): GitHub - 2shrestha22/lineage-call-recording-enabler: A Runtime Resource Overlay for the dialer app in LineageOS to enable call recording for all countries.

Call recording country limitation will be removed in future builds. That said, a gentle reminder: People should not ignore laws in their country and iodé is not responsible for misuse of the device in a given jurisdiction. Thanks for your feedback!

Copy/Paste from my new post on the latest update: On the new update am I able to record calls? Can I do that without sideloading something. On GOS the option appeared without doing anything extra. I thought I would update and make a call and there would be a record call option during the call. That did not happen. Anyway this will work without a novice adb user doing extra work! Thanks!

Rik is call recording going to become generally available without sideload changes? I got the impression it would be available in the newest update but it is not available for me. I have made multiple connected calls and have no record option. If it isn’t going to become generally available without side loading something I will return to GOS and adopt a wait and see for iode. Perhaps I did not understand what you have already written. If not I am sorry. I just want clarification. Thanks!

Please specify your device.

This is a Pixel 7 with iode 7.2

I also have a Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL with iode but they those two do not have Sim cards currently. Only my Pixel 7 has a sim

I have a Pixel 7 Pro on 7.2 and call recording is available during a call, so I am surprised you are not seeing it.

Wow me too. What do I do?

Are you using iode stock phone app? And under phone/settings is call recording listed? It is not for me. On my Pixel 4 same thing. No call recording. I do not understand how I can have a different Pixel 7 iode 7.2 then you!

No, there is nothing in settings about it, but it shows in the bottom right after the call is connected “automagically”.

I just tested with another SIM and when making calls with it the “record call” icon doesn’t show. So this seems to be a carrier-dependent feature. So right now, in the USA, a Verizon SIM gives the call record option, but a T-Mobile SIM does not.

Yesterday I put GOS back on the iode Pixel 7 and call recording returned. I did it as a test thinking maybe I would need to reinstall iode. So my t-mobile call recording consistently works with grapheneos on my Pixel 7 but does not work with iode for some reason. I hope that information helps with the development of iode

Hi Rik. I installed iode on a Pixel 8 Pro today. I made a call and call recording appeared. Then when I was downloading apps on f-droid I accidentally installed the fossify phone app which I then uninstalled. Now call recording is gone. Did that app install ruin my call recording and if so can I fix it? Thanks

I suspect when you reinstall the default AOSP phone app you just need to do something in its settings to turn the recording option back on.

I use Fossify Phone and pretty sure that doesn’t support the recording option by default…
