Has anyone managed to do this? Downloaded the install prog, set the linux mint permission to run as a program, plug my phone into pc. My phone appears on the pc screen and I Select ‘Transfer files’ on the phone screen. Nothing happens apart from the folders within the phone appear on the pc screen. Tried unzipping the auto install folder in downloads on the pc and double tapping on the installer icon. Any ideas please or should I try windows?
Maybe @petefoth can help you as he’s using Mint. I only use the manual method (which I think it’s much better) so cannot help you…
I think the auto installer for XA2 might have been suspended on the server as it is trying to install iode 6.0 Might be best to either flash 5.8 or a 5.9, or wait for the team to repair 6.0 for XA2 before trying to use the auto installer.
Well. He is trying to install on XZ2 (not XA2) and he has the file (or so I understood).
But since I have never used the auto-installer it is not impossible that what you say could be related.
Damn… must try to pay more attention to detail. My mistake! The thing is that the installer version of iode auto identifies your device and then finds the latest version of the OS for it to install, all you have to do is plug it in whilst it’s switched on. So if the OP is using the installer why is he downloading one of the manual install versions?
Sorry I’ve never used the installer. Command line in MacOS and / or Linux works for me
Thank you everyone for your resonses.
I think that I will give Iode a miss. Before I tried the install I contacted the development team with a few questions but they never replied then I encounter this install problem so I think that I will go for lineage instead.
Good luck. And I hope you emerge unscathed from their user ‘support’ channels on Reddit, irc, and Discord
Surprised to hear this as I tried the auto installer the first time I loaded iode and it was a breeze. Have gone back to using manual installs for the rest but I was impressed with the ease of it at the time and thought it was a great idea for new users. The OP said he was using linux mint and I used it without having to make any adjustments whatsoever using Parrot OS (both Debian based), so no issues there. Just double cliked the run file and followed the ‘next’ button instructions that came up on the screen.
It saddens me to see potential users walking away without having had the chance to experience the product.
I currently use a pixel 3a ububtu touch but would like a google free phone with decent navigation. I will give Lineage a go but the installation on an Xperia XZ2 looks pretty complicated so I may well retry Iode. Not keen on microg though.
Then you can disable it. But any apps that need Google’s libraries and APIs won’t run.
I don’t have an XZ2 here at the moment or I would test the installer for you. Have you tried flashing it with the flash-all.sh or .bat method yet?
Not tried flashing method. It is a brand new phone and I feel nervous about bricking it that’s why I decided to try Iode auto install. I downloaded the installer to my download folder then plugged in my phone. Nothing happened. How do the installer and phone locate each other Do I have to do anything with the install program residing in my downloads folder to set it running.
You need to install the installer program on to your PC in the same way as you would normally. Same for both Linux or Windows versions. Have you unlocked the bootloader yet by going here?.. Unlock bootloader | Developer World
Managed to get the installer to run. Phone detected ok. Asked me to enable usb debug and oem unlocking. Done both but now the install program hangs at the point when it has downloaded configuration and usb tools. The ‘Next’ button is greyed out.
Realised later that I had not unlocked bootloader so will try again tonight.
How’s it going Alan? Waiting in anticipation here.
Been finding out how to unlock bootlaoder. Need to visit Sony web site and enter imie . Then I need to agree to all the disclaimers regarding bricking the phone. Then I have to generate an unlock code with the imie. Then I have to type in a long string of symbols, digits and possibly letters on the phone keypad. Then I have to enter the unlock code into the phone. Then I have to run the install program again. Simple? I think the Iode installation video is misleading so another factor in deciding whether I want to proceed. The only reason that I am still contemplating going ahead is that you and other forum members have been so nice and helpful. Too tired tonight I have an extremely busy life.
This is the reason as to why you can buy iode pre-installed ready to use from the iode shop, but is always best to learn from practical experience IMHO if you are serious about becoming an open source user. I have a couple of demonstration phones (both XA2’s) at the moment that I lend out thru’ ebay to folks in order to allow them try iode with no obligation to buy or commit their own phone by installing iode without trying it first.
The unlock bootloader process becomes routine and relatively fast once you have done a few and is the same with all manufacturers in that they don’t go much out of their way to encourage users to stray away from the clutches of the established industry by excluding the spyware whilst at the same time extending the useful life of their own products. So I regard it to be an ‘industry problem’ rather than an open source issue.
Been trying to find how to enter the unlock code into the phone. too much conflicting advice and many different methods. I don’t understand the instructions on the Iode site.
Maybe have another look on friday but now I realise why people stay with google and Apple. I don’t think there will ever be a serious competitor to them unless someone writes some easy to follow, jargon free, abbreviation free and comprehensive instructions.
