Insular or Shelter on Fairphone 4 with iodè

Hi,
thank you for the beautiful OS!

I have installed iodè on my Fairphone and so far I am very satisfied. Now I’m faced with the decision of whether to install Shelter or Insular. So far I have been using Shelter (on Google Android).

Is there anything to consider when using Insular or Shelter on a Fairphone 4 with iodè or does iodè support something similar out of the box in the meantime?

The Shelter app has not been updated since December 2023!
The author writes on Gitea:

Since Shelter simply makes use of the Work Profile APIs exposed by Android,
there is a limited set of features that are possible to implement via the app.
As we do not intend on leveraging (or "abusing") adb privileges, the features of
Shelter can only be a strict subset of the exposed, unprivileged APIs.

As a result, we do not intend on adding a lot of new features to Shelter going
forward, unless there is to be big changes in the capabilities of work profile APIs.
Shelter is currently in an effective maintenance mode. Nevertheless, the author
is still committed to regularly adapting Shelter to all new Android versions as
soon as possible after they are released -- this includes upgrading the target SDK
level, adapting to any new features or restrictions introduced by the new Android
version, updating all dependencies, and so on. The author still relies on Shelter
for his daily life, so Shelter will not become abandonware in the forseeable
future.

However, I am concerned that Shelter is no longer being developed or maintained!

Do you have any experience with Insular?
Is Insular comparable to Shelter?

Thank you for your answer!

I am currently using Shelter with iodeOS and everything works.
From Android 15 there is the “Android 15 Private Space” that probably does the same thing
(I haven’t tried it yet.).

A quick skim of “Android Private Space” doesn’t show if it can “freeze” apps like Shelter does. Freezing is the key use for me at least, since the occasional necessary but a bit “evil” apps are often the worst offenders at autostarting in background and spamming notifications.

Shelter keeps working fine for me, some of the policies behind Island I didn’t like, but Insular seems to address those. So Insular may be a better choice but I don’t see it offering functionality I would use beyond Shelter at least currently.

I have decided to test the Android Private Space. The setup was easy (even without a google account). As I understand it, the apps are inactive when the account is deactivated. If the phone will locked, the private space will locked too.
