I wouldn’t buy a S9 because it’s stuck on Android 13 and won’t receive any updates in the future. Try S10e as it still gets updated or any other Sony device because of better hardware support (ZX phones for example). For longtime support and better security, always go for google pixel devices.
Yes, this is definitely helpful, thanks for the advice!
However, in my case I’m not (yet?) planning to buy a new phone and moving everything there. I rather want to try out this OS without investing too much money/time. Therefore I’m looking for compatible phones in my area that don’t cost a lot (at the Moment only the S9).
I’m sorry I can’t help you. Since not one of my questions has been answered, I’m no longer pursuing this idea. My interest has shifted towards Graphene OS at the moment - I might have another look at iodé at a later date, though.
I found only one install guide, but it seems to be an official one: The instructions in the ‘ota’ link in my very first post are quite specific, so it is probably clear what to do. However, it is not very detailed, so you must know what certain terms mean exactly.
A Samsung phone is no longer a good choice for any custom ROM anyway, as Samsungs lose VoLTE functionality upon installation. That is, they’re a poor choice unless you don’t need a mobile service provider for your usage, e.g. as a wifi-only or third-party-messaging-app-only device (with a SIM providing data).
Most mobile service providers have switched, or will soon switch to VoLTE-only for phone calls, and may have discontinued all their 2G and 3G bands, which means no backup network for non-VoLTE calls. No VoLTE, no calling possible.
Search “Samsung VoLTE” in the forum to see discussions about this.
My daily driver is a FP5 running E/OS and the S9 is just for fooling around. I wanted to check out the parental control stuff before installing it on my son’s phone.
Anyway, the Iodé official install guide is pretty thin and Heimdall returns USB errors under Windows. I’ll have a crack at it on my Linux box next week.
