posting this here, as i couldn’t really find something like a “best practices” anywhere and don’t have enough knowledge to decide things on my own
Maybe this thread could evolve into a “best practices for Noobs and regular Joes/Janes”
I installed iode and went as far as I could with F-droid Apps. Now I need to get the apps, that are not available there and have to start using the phone as daily driver.
What are best practices from a data-privacy standpoint, that don’t slow me down much compared to regular Android? I just don’t like being tracked all the time and being forced to throw away perfectly good hardware.
get apps from Aurora: What if google kills aurora?
What about apk-mirror: safe, updates?
What about MicroG, how to configure, so as little data as possible is transmitted? What do I need it for?
What about apps, that contain a paid version (I have Osmand premium on my regular Android)? How can I use them? Can I?
Did I miss anything? (I am new to Android, Privacy, etc)
I wrote the following for the BraX3 running iodéOS, but it pretty much applies to anyone new to iodé working through what apps to choose and such.
I came from iPhone so its written from that perspective; but just as useful if you have been on Android already previously - because again its about what are the app alternatives and what’s a good choice (at least initially) to get started safely…
Great questions, but it can lead to so many personal opinions. Like Aves gallery, Fairmail and Secure (graphene) camera.
If you miss apps in Fdroid you can add repository’s. Like: https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/repo If you are confused by Fdroid, you can install Neostore or Droid-ify. Also easier for more repo’s. Use Aurora only when there is no alternative.
MicroG: you don’t have to use. But coming from full propietary apps, you probably still need it. For info on After Install you can rely on Lineage: Installation · lineageos4microg/l4m-wiki Wiki · GitHub Iodé-team can maybe add the Post Install instructions part on their site.
I’m on stock Pixel 9a for now, but have used Lineage and Yaap on earlier phone. Both with microg. But also no nothing (Vanilla).
I need it for one photo-TAN-app for banking. But both, MicroG and the TAN-app are “banned” to a second user. So my main user stays google-free
Look into the repository possibilities on fdroid, like Nollie said. For example, I have added the special repository for ThreemaLibre - the updates are a lot faster directly from the source than via fdroid standard repository. How do I install Threema Libre? – Threema
No worries - hope it helps. Its not the last word of anything, just a good place to start with safe apps to use and a few other tips about what not to do…
I’m due to add a few more notes to it sometime soon…
