Group SMS Not Working with Apple users

Hello,

I’ve just switched from CalyxOS to IodeOS and everything was seamless and with no learning curve. However messaging does not seem to work: when I send individual messages (SMS or MMS), both Apple and Android owners receive and reply so that I receive the messages.

However, if I create a group with several Apple users, they receive my messages but I cannot get their replies (text or pictures) sent.

I’ve already set the messaging app to “send as MMS“ and “send group messages as MMS“. And I’ve also tried to disable those settings in case needed some resetting. Still not working.

And at random, I get “Microg keeps stopping“… Any suggestions?

“Works for me” isn’t a satisfactory answer, but at least it does show that it isn’t a system-wide issue. Can you confirm if your number has been disconnected from RCS? You can do that here: https://messages.google.com/disable-chat If it is still an issue can you give your carrier details? Also are you able to send / receive photos to individuals? Just wanting to double-confirm MMS is working.

About microG crashes can you confirm your device and iodéOS version? If it persists after updating (a recent microG update was issued this past week to help users on iodéOS 4.x that reported crashing), please start a separate thread for it.

@rik Thanks for the reply

I just installed IodeOS migrating from CalyxOS this week where I did not have any of the messaging issues (that’s actually how I found out as I kept messaging to those already created chats and I’d not get replies only to find out that these were sent, I just did not receive them).

I’ve not changed carrier (T-Mobile US), device (Pixel 9) or phone number and I can confirm that if I message a single contact I can both send and receive text and pictures.

The IodeOS Updater shows “No new updates found“ (the version I have says 7.1, android 16, last checked Jan 24).

I’ve installed Google Messages and the “RCS chats“ menu shows “Status: Not Supported - No compatible SIM card detected“. Toggled Off and back On a couple of times but no luck. Yet, given I’ve always had the same phone, SIM and carrier and everything was working with CalyxOS, I have to believe it’s a IodeOS specific issue… But I’m no expert

thanks for the support!

If you open the app F-Droid and go to repositories → IodéOS apps → clicking on microG Services Core, what does it say which version you are on? Is it 0.3.12.xx?

Sorry I didn’t mean to install Google Messages, instead using that link you can enter your phone number directly on the page to disable it.

But knowing it is the same device, carrier, etc. it should be working, as Calyx also uses microG just as iodéOS does.

Did you restore using Seedvault, possibly there is an issue there that would need a storage reset of the Messages app. Or you can also try to use QUIK or another messages app to compare / contrast if the same issue persists.

Hi @rik apologies for the late reply but I could not make that work and since I need my phone for my business, I ended up reverting back to stock ROM. I’m unhappy with it but have to at least be able to use the basic features of a phone.

Here are some additional details in case someone finds them useful: I did try QUIK and even the Google Messages to no avail, all the apps had the same (non) behavior: could send to individual recipients but not to groups. Google Messages is also what’s indicated in the link you provided that basically instructs to install the app and check the RCS status. Always the same “service not available on this device“. Which is ridiculous because not only I had no problems with CalyxOS, but as soon as I flashed the stock ROM I received all the hundreds of replies that I did not get while I had IODE. I asked the UBIF people who, apparently work directly with Google, and they told me that when a device is flashed too often it’s possible that the carrier (T-Mobile in my case) blocks the service; this could make sense but it would not explain why immediately after flashing back to stock ROM the RCS worked and all messages were delivered.

To your other (and @MissPiggy, thank you!) questions: I set up IODE as new device and all apps and services were set as a clean installation. I also did NOT flask IODE directly from CalyxOS, I first re-flashed the device with the stock Android (used Android 16 most recent public release) and then I used IODE web tool. MicroG did not give me any error or missing check in the self check and everything was up-to-date. I did check the APN settings and it was correctly set as T-Mobile instructs. Finally (if at all relevant) I am a long-tenure T-Mobile customer so I still have a very old SIM card, not an eSIM.

I guess something was probably stopped by the carrier, likely due to IODE rom (since with stock and CalyxOS RCS worked fine) but cannot understand why. Hopefully, it’s just my unique situation. Will try again as soon as I can afford.

Dd you have your sim card in after reflashing stock? It is my guess that your carrier detected that and migrated you to RCS communications (or it is auto-enabled by reflashing stock). While it doesn’t work to use Google Messages in iodé to disable RCS, you can do it from stock Android. So you can check now that you are on stock again to see if RCS is enabled or not under Google Messages and disable it for sure.

I think if you want to try again you could make sure that RCS is disabled, then again make certain that “Allow OEM Unlocking” is also enabled, then once again attempt to reflash iodéOS as check the results. I understand it is tedious and you may have lost motivation in the meantime :frowning:

The SMS it’s not working on my new Samsung Iodeio i buy on iodeio France - i can send messages only to my Pixel 4a i have boot on iodeio, mean wile on Pixel 4a i receive only National SMS from my Greek Sim provider - but when i get SMS from France or Germany it not come in. So i ask the simple question :red_question_mark: what is iodeio for a redacted when the Phone and Tablet not work in basic Phone functionality. Spend 500€ on your iode redacted but i go with pleasure back to IPhone and iPad where every thing works well. Send me a message when you have fix your iodeio and it works like i phone with principle phone function

@kaliyi you will note that your post was flagged and I have taken steps to redact the inappropriate language.

I can appreciate your frustration, but I believe I replied to you today on email and will re-post for others that may experience similar issues:

I am not certain of the various carrier relationships in Europe, but likely you may be facing a “Roaming” issue to be able to deliver a SMS across carriers. But in addition, it could be that as you have used the SIM in an iPhone that the messages are being intercepted by iMessage and thus converted to their format. You would need to de-register the phone number from iMessage following this guidance: Deregister and Turn Off iMessage - Apple Support

In short I believe first of all you need to make sure your number is disconnected from Apple iMessage. If you can confirm that, then we can go to the next steps.

I agree. On thing is show and voice frustration with not working product, which is fine. On the other hand, toxic and vulgar tone is unnecessary and not welcomed.

Just to chime in here, just like the OP, I have been having the same issue with not being able to receive group messages from iOS users.( also long time T-Mobile user) In the past I tried deactivating RCS (via the link posted in this thread) to no avail. Deactivation requires authentication via SMS but as a iodeOS user I never received it. However, I have a new Fairphone6 now which came with /e/os and in the process of attempting to flash iodeOS on to it, I flashed the Fairphone OS on to it to start a fresh with flashing and lo and behold as I was playing around with the phone (I had already put my Sim in it) an SMS notification flashed which turned out to be the deactivation code from google. At the time it did not occur to me but I tried again today and was able to receive the deactivation code and enter it. We will see what happens. Just to clarify, I am still on IodeOS using my pixel6a, waiting to flash iodeOS on the FP6 once I am able to lock the bootloader…
