I do have a couple family members that would like this to be possible for my device so that when I am road cycling they could know if I am dead in a ditch somewhere

Yes, fairly straight forward. Its on a t4g.nano AWS instance with Traccar. It also has Nginx fronting it.

Packer Image: bitservices / packer / location-aws · GitLab

Then there’s some Terraform responsible for creating the instance as well as managing any secrets/etc.

The FMD server on its own is very light you could easily put it on another server or NAS you have

Edit: the only negative side I’ve seen with FMD is that it uses fused location and you can’t make it use precise only (despite there being an option to). This might be an Android limitation

Another option is a Nextcloud server with phonetrack module ( PhoneTrack - Apps - App Store - Nextcloud )

I use it with GPSlogger on my phone.

Interesting! What sort of battery hit are we talking about here?

It depends on the frequency and the accuracy you set.

With my FP5, for a rather high accuracy and a position requested every 15 minutes, 24/7, it is about 5% battery hit.

The Significant Motion does not work great. Actually, I haven’t found any app with this option working good enough to my taste.
