I am having a strange problem and I am looking for guidance on how I can debug it.
I have recently switched to a different mobile network provider and decided to give eSIMs a go. This appeared to have installed correctly on my FP5 and I usually get coverage and H/H+. Intermittently I saw 4G, but never 5G. I have been testing the coverage in many places: indoor/outdoor, in spots weak network or strong and the effect is always the same. Previously, with a physical SIM I was able to connect to 4G/5G.
Is there anything within iodeOS that might be interfering with the authentication mechanisms of 4G/5G? How to obtain some logs from my connection attempts? Is there anything on the provider side that might be causing this?
You can try *#*#4636#*#* and then go to Phone Information and look there for some connection information. Also check your “System Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your sim > Preferred network type”.
But with a new provider it could be as simple as their towers not having as strong of a signal in your location. You can use something like tower from f-droid to show cell (or gps) towers, signal strength, etc. that may be informative. Full disclosure: I haven’t used it myself (yet).
But this is all general to cellular connectivity (not specific to eSIM). I guess I am saying I don’t know of anything eSIM specific that would be at play here, but I guess it isn’t outside the realm of possible (I think you would need to get in contact with your provider to get more info from their side on what they are seeing regarding your device registration, etc.)
Thanks. This is very useful. I obviously didn’t know about *#*#4636#*#*. I also installed tower and will do more testing.
I have been in contact with the provider for a week about this issue. I think the additional difficulty may be that they are chartering, if I understand correctly, from a larger network. They did send me a physical SIM so I should be able to test it if it’s eSIM specific soon.
There are areas where the signal is very strong but at best I see H+. I cannot reproduce it, but I saw intermittently 4G on at least 3 occasions so it occurred to me that some authentication process is initiating but failing.
Ok. The problem does not appear to be specific to eSIM. The network just sent me a physical SIM and it’s the same problem, so I am going to mark this as solution and ask inside a new thread as the problem persists and also same physical SIM works fine on my old Blackberry with Android.
