Hi all! Please, I currently do not have Iodé but thinking about buying a compatible phone and installing it. Could you please tell me if Iodé would allow me to disable the 5G from the phone, and let only 3G and 4G active? Thank you.
Yes, you can choose your preferred type of network (5G, 4G or 3G) per SIM card. But why would you want that to to?
All devices have the option to choose the network type.
The good thing is that devices without a 5G radio tend to be less expensive. Here are a few:
Fairphone 3
google pixels 3,4, & 5
Motorola G32, G42, G52
Most Samsungs (NOT: A52s or Galaxy Note 10+)
all of the devices with official support (and with or without 5G radio) can be seen here: https://iode.tech/installation/
Thank you. Ok, that’s great, and do you know if there is a way to deactivate the 5G antenna completely, likely with coding. If you select preferred network as LTE, the 5G antenna will still be on. The reason for this is health, as there are many studies on 5G, showing how damaging it can be to the body.
Thank you. Where i am right now, i cannot purchase the phones sold by Iode, it would not enter the country. And i have not been able to find old phones that work with iode but without 5G.
Turning it off via software is possible, as stated above. You can never be 100% sure software is doing what it says it’s doing on closed hardware - this is why people want hardware switches for mic, camera, etc. However, on radio this can be confirmed external to the device, so it is reasonable to believe it. A radio that doesn´t turn off when told to do so by the OS would not pass guidelines set by radio regulators such as the FCC.
Thank you very much. Please, do you know how to implement this change on the phone? Via ADB, perhaps? If so, what would be the command to make the phone use 4G, 3G, and 2G, on this order, depending on the avaiability, but never use 5G? Thank you
You can do this on any device. go to settings > SIMs > Preferred network type and choose the one including all except NR (5G) and starting with LTE (4G). Will be something like:
LTE/TDSCDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA
The settings may depend a little on your version of iode. Or you can look up your android version and find specific instructions.
more info:
- LTE (4G)
- WCDMA (3G)
- EvDo (3G for CDMA networks)
- TDSCDMA (3G variant used primarily in China)
- GSM (2G)
Thank you so much, i wasnt able to find this information elsewhere.
Hi Gus, can you specify which studies state that 5G is bad for health and could you maybe share a link or so?
That sounds more like conspiracy theory to me tbh
But sadly, those who believe such unscientific nonsense see any evidence to the contrary as confirming their conspiracy-based beliefs - see Confirmation bias - Wikipedia
It seems reasonable to avoid this technology. Numerous documentation can be found on Yandex search engine, less politicaly oriented
Fairphone 3 does. Bought an used one.
Another solution to you problem would be to chose a phone that doesn’t have 5G. It it doesn’t have it, it cannot cause you problems.
I don’t have 5G phones… nor do I intend to use 5G.
I don’t intend to upgrade from 4G any time soon either if only so I can keep using XA2’s however, 3G services are being withdrawn by British service providers at the moment and presumably the same will happen to 4G at some point in the future, especially if FOSS phones take off. Having people walking around with older model phones running latest android versions? Can’t be having any of that now can we!
