Can't send SMS anymore, FP4 IODE 6.7-20250830-FP4

I’ve recently started having massive issues sending plain text SMS messages, they just won’t send, using either qksms or fossify messages. I’ve been through two IODE OS updates with this issue and sometimes it works immediately after a reboot but then stops working.

my only suggestion is it’s somehow related to the IODE OS blocking mobile data (I have tried to block absolutely everything from mobile data because I don’t have a data allowance and I’m on a grandfathered pre-pay tariff because my usage does not justify the cost of a contract)

My reasoning for this assumption is because my provider recently disabled their 3G network, and a few weeks ago I received a warning from them by email saying that although my phone appeared to support 4G, it had been seen repeatedly connecting to their 3G network, which was being decomissioned, leading me to reluctantly conclude I need to have mobile data enabled to connect to 4G. I text fairly infrequently but the timing does seem to fit.

This is a serious problem because although I don’t use it very much, I absolutely need SMS capability due to disability.

Note: this is not a money or signal issue, and my provider does not and has never supported 2G. WiFi and WiFI calling are enabled, VoLTE is enabled, data roaming is disabled

Please clarify your country and carrier.

Additional questions:

  • Is issue only for sending SMS or also receiving?
  • VoLTE (“4G calling”) is essentially a “data” connection. Can you confirm calls in and out are working? Confirm VoLTE is enabled under “System Settings > Network and internet > SIMs > Your SIM > VoLTE”
  • Are you attempting to send SMS to a single recipient or multiple? For “multiple” you will need to confirm in the Messaging app(s) that you send to multiple recipients as SMS.

Let’s get that info from you then go from there.

I’m in the UK on Three.
No issues receiving, only sending
VoLTE is listed as ‘4G calling’, is enabled and calls work when I do my balance check
sending to single recipients, but I’ve had the issue with more than one contact.

Physical SIMs sometimes fail. You are receiving SMS, so the device is correctly authenticating on your network.

  1. Please rule out that the problem is not with your carrier or the physical SIM. They might have blocked outgoing SMS. please place the SIM in another device and see if you have the same problem. If the problem persists it is either the carrier or the SIM.
  2. Please rule out that the problem is not with changes you’ve made to the configuration:
    Create a new user (this can easily be deleted later) (system > Users > add user > Turn on phone calls and SMS and then Switch to new user, and configure it. do SMSs arrive? to delete the user: switch to owner and choose the user, last option lets you delete. they don’t arrive? could be software or hardware.

So I was going to try your sggestions this morning, but Sod and his law, it is mysteriously working now, So I’m just going to wait and see what happens for now, and if it stops working again I’ll try some of your suggestions. Maybe fiddling with the WiFi/mobile data toggles yesterday has kicked something.
