Can't make or receive phone calls 7.8

  • Device: Brax3
  • iodéOS Version: 7.8
  • Affected App(s): phone

Short Description:

I can’t make or receive phone calls. I’m on the 7.8 beta. When you try to call it immediately says call ended and boots you back to the last menu. And when someone calls me it waits for a few seconds without ringing then goes straight to my voicemail.

Additional Information:

I am using mint mobile, so T mobile. I tried rebooting multiple times, turning my data / sim off and on. I tried with and without WiFi. I did check and I’m getting data just fine with my sim. I just updated this evening from 7.7 I made a phone call about an hour before that, and now it doesn’t work. Not sure what to try next.

Check APN it is often the root cause

I checked and this is what mint had on there website for the apn settings. They were all already what they were supposed to be except for the bottom 2 because I can’t find a place for them to go in the settings.

  1. Name – Mint
  2. APN – Wholesale
  3. Proxy – (leave blank)
  4. Port – (leave blank)
  5. Username – (leave blank)
  6. Password – (leave blank)
  7. Server – (leave blank)
  8. MMSC – http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
  9. Multimedia Message Proxy – (leave blank)
  10. Multimedia Message Port – 8080
  11. MCC – (do not change default values)
  12. MNC – (do not change default values)
  13. Authentication Type – (leave blank)
  14. APN Type – default,supl,mms,ia
  15. APN Protocol – IPv4/IPv6
  16. APN Roaming Protocol – IPv4/IPv6
  17. MVNO type: GID
  18. MVNO value: 756D

Check with *#*#INFO#*#* (INFO is 4636) and then Phone Information V2 > IMS if VoLTE is available.

It may be the phone is trying to drop to 3G which doesn’t exist in the USA anymore, so on the “Data & Network” of Phone Information you can change to Set Preferred Network Type: NR/LTE just to be sure (this means it would only use 4G / 5G which is all we have anyway).

Since you have mobile data it is a bit odd, that is usually not working unless your APN is correct. But you may want to use wholesale (no cap) and also maybe explicitly test with the APN Protocol = IPV4 or IPV6.

Each time you make a change you need to go to airplane mode for 15-30 seconds before re-connecting. Maybe just reboot it to be sure.

Ok I’ve tried everything except the first paragraph, with no luck. sorry I guess I’m a little too simple to understand what it means. What info am I supposed to check?

Also I verified my texts are working fine, not sure on mms though.

You dial that code in the phone dialer.

Once you get to the screen that shows network info, tap the 3-dot menu in the upper right corner and select “IMS Service Status.”

Ohhh got it, feels very cheat menu like. Well it says there all unavailable.

Settings > Network and internet > SIMs > [your telco name] > 2G network protection > this is right at the bottom of the menu, and should be toggled ON. The wording here is misleading: “2G is always allowed for emergency calls” This is not true in many modern western countries, and this must be ON to make 2G off, and stop the phone trying to drop back to 2G. This was part of my fix to get phone calls working on 7.6, but I’ve given up being a beta tester

Good to know, I toggled it on and restarted my phone but still nothing…

A fixed version has been pushed on the beta channel. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks to @vince31fr for the quick fix. Also not exactly related anymore for this case, but I did take some time to writeup a guide on checking / updating SIM / APN settings and then using the “cheat code”
