Cannot send SMS

Hello,
I’ve recently realized that I cannot send any SMS anymore.
Receiving is instead working just fine.

Whenever I try, regardless the recipient I use, I got an Error Code 104 from the Fossify app.
I’m running the latest Iodé OS 6.8 on a Fairphone 5.

I’ve already tried, as suggested elsewhere, to check my SIM card in another phone and sending was fine there.

I also created a second profile but the issue is reproduced there also.

Could you please advise on what I can do to get the issue sorted out?

Regards,
James

Country / carrier? My guess is that it may be your carrier force migrating your SMS / MMS messages to RCS now, which is not supported by microG or other non-Google Play Services embedded devices.

If you have your SIM in device supporting RCS using Google Messages you can in there disable it for the SIM, but you should also be able to disable RCS messages for your phone number “without your old (Google RCS enabled) device” by visiting here:

This is just speculation, but as I understand you certainly do want to disable RCS for your phone number, as they aren’t supported by microG ROMs. But if your SIM was in a RCS enabled device, your carrier may basically register your number as “RCS capable” thus leading to some of this headache.

Hi,

I’m using an italian mvno as for my carrier (coop voce, which is basically vodafone).
I checked through google messages if the RCS could be the things but it is reporting that my device/sim are not RCS capable.

Any other rhing I can try?

Thanks,
James

To get a broader understanding, are there any issues with cellular data?

Do you have MMS service? (I know many in Europe do not and you are better off for not needing it if that is true, just checking)

How do you receive the 104 error code?

I missed that you indicated you can’t send SMS anymore. So did this work before an update, or what changed?

Hi,

My mobile data is working just fine, no issue with that.

As for the 104 erro, it is raised by the Fossify messages app when I press the send button: it basically prompts me that it cannot send the messages due to this error code.

I cannot tell exactly when it stopped working (I’m not sending sms frequently) but I can confirm that last time I tried (around 2 months ago) I had no issues.

MMS are offered by my operator but I never used them.

The only changes I applied to my phone settings since there (but I cannot say whether it is related or not) are:

  • Upgraded Iodé OS to version 6.8
  • Created an additional user profile to the mail one

Thanks for your support,
James

To isolate it if is an app issue or a network issue, can you install QUIK SMS from f-droid and test if it has the same issue (it will prompt you to become the default SMS app, accept that … we can uninstall it later if no change)?

Hey,
That is something I’ve already tried with no luck.
However, I have an update that I’ve just found:
If I force the connectivity on 3g, SMS are just fine (both sending and receiving) so everything seems to be related to some buggy 4g/5g stuff that was not there before (never set my phone to 3g before)…

This may be something you want to pass to your provider, maybe it will uncover something on their side?

Hi,
I’m skeptical about this being a carrier issue as the same works just fine on other phones regardless the network type (but usually 4g).

A few days ago, I noticed that I couldn’t receive or send text messages with Fossify Messenger (fp5 with iodé 7.2). So I removed it via “Pre-installed apps” and installed two other messaging apps (“Messages” from Saalin Quadri and “Quick”) from the F-Droid store. The same problem occurred with both: no messages could be received or sent. This is particularly annoying because of the mtan sent by banks, which now no longer come through. But even “normal” text messages from other people are not being received.
I have now put my SIM card into an older Samsung Galaxy – and text messages can be received and sent again!
The error occurred a few days after installing version 7.2. Immediately after reinstalling, I was able to receive SMS messages (I didn’t test sending them).

I am a bit confused, so you can receive SMS after maybe a reinstall? Or are you still unable to message on the FP5 with iodéOS 7.2 and you are still on your older Samsung device because of this issue?

Your last sentence is right. Also today I can´t send a SMS or receive one.

What we found today: SMS only works if I force connectivity to 3g (4/5g doesn´t work) AND I have to use the fossify-messages in Version 1.7.0. I realized that the automatically (via FDroid) installed Version 1.8.0 also doesn´t work (SMS couldn´t neither been send nor received).
My actual workaraound is: when I need to receive a mtan change to 3g (after use I change back to 5g). And I disabled an update to fossify-messages 1.8.0

Unfortunately my workaround doesn´t work! I can´t receive mTan from different banks (but I can send and receive “normal” SMS). Curious: all worked fine until February 7th this year. The last Iodé-Update was from January 22nd. What happend? I’m really at a loss.

Hi Walter,

sorry for your difficulties with SMS (unfortunately, I can’t help you with this problem).

I don’t want to sound patronizing, but I would really recommend that you switch to another TAN-method, since SMS is very, very insecure.

Banking apps like Push-TAN are slightly better but often don’t work with custom ROM. For this reason, I switched to chipTAN some years ago and have not regretted it once ever since.

I am sure that you have already thought about this. Please just ignore my advice if it is unwanted. In case you wish to learn more, just open a new thread for it or send me a PN.

Hope your SMS-problem can be solved, soon!

Yes, you are absolutely right. But the banks decide, which TAN-method you have to use, it’s not me! I also use chipTAN and pushTAN but there are banks who didn’t invest in security. In Germany every bank decides independently which TAN-method they want to use. Nevertheless, thank you very much for your help.

Do you mean an SMS sent via the banking app itself? If so, you need to ensure the app has phone / sms permissions enabled (they are likely not enabled by default). So go to “Long Press App Icon > App Info > Permissions” and see what is not enabled there that may be needed.

About not receiving (or sending?) SMS, is this true SMS or is it being upgraded to MMS and you maybe have incorrect APN settings? Please confirm your country / carrier and APN settings from “Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > (your sim) > Access Point Names”.

You can also get the APN settings from your working Samsung device to cross-reference.

Can you also comment on if mobile data and phone calls work on the Fairphone?
