Cannot reinstall preinstalled apps

I moved the app with “Preinstallled Apps” as you and others discribed, restarted the fp5. I also tried to install again from Fdroid but nothing works. The fossify-messenger doesn’t appear - nowhere.

I am trying hard to break Preinstalled Apps (get it in the confused state where “Preinstalled Apps” shows it installed but it isn’t installed) and just can’t do it! I guess I keep trying to see if I can break it…

Hi,

I also have accidentially created a new user and disabled the preinstalled apps, resulting in losing all of them on my “Owner” profile. I managed to create another user without deselecting the preinstalled apps who now has all of them, but my original user does not see them.

I tried to reinstall them for the original user via the Settings → Apps → Preinstalled apps with all the needed reboots which did not work. I managed to install f-droid into this user account, added the iode repo, but cannot install any iode apps (f-droid always returns to the “Install” step). Adding the apps via adb (pm install-existing …) did not work also.

How can I get the apps back into the “Owner” profile.

Best Regards, Christoph

Just a quick update from me:

Funnily I had the iode browser avaible under 7.5.. I believe I installed it via f-droid again and for whatever reason it was available. Not sure if I did something else.

Since the 7.6 update it is gone again and I am not able to reinstall as mentioned above.

Maybe one note. When I initially installed iode I did deselect some preinstalled apps, incl Iode browser. Since then I am struggling with installing any of those.

I have been trying again to “break” Preinstalled Apps to match you or @Henning but I can not reproduce the issue.

On a test phone, I created a new user “New User 1”. In the setup of that account, I deselected several apps. After reboot, they are indeed gone as well as for the “Owner” account.

In “Owner” I then reinstalled them in Preinstalled Apps. They show up correctly again for both the “Owner” and “New User 1”.

To @Henning with the browser, if the Preinstalled Apps has it removed, then after system upgrade it is again removed.

So I don’t know where to go from here exactly. There may be a bug in here, but if we can’t reproduce it then it is hard to know what we can do to assist. The “sledge hammer” solution is to reset your device which would certainly be painful but would clear up the issue.

Hi rik,

I had the idea to re-apply the latest update (7.6). Is there a documented way to do this using e. g. adb?

Regards, Christoph

You can download it and just install from the “Updater app > top right 3 dots > Local update” but unfortunately I suspect your issue lies in your userdata partition which isn’t touched during a system update.

This is why a userdata reset fixes the issue but a reinstall isn’t needed. There was a “Preinstalled Apps” issues from a year ago that was identified and could be reproduced. That was then fixed, but for users experiencing the issue a reset was still needed (the “fix” prevented the issue from happening going forward).
