Cannot reinstall OpenEUICC

I’m having trouble reinstalling OpenEUICC. I uninstalled it from the Preinstalled Apps menu because I was having an issue with my eSIM not being recognized. I thought that reinstalling might fix the problem. However, I’m now unable to fully reinstall OpenEUICC.

When I reinstall OpenEUICC from the Preinstalled Apps menu, it appears to install, but no app icon is available. I can see that the app is installed, but I can’t open it or add a new SIM via: Network & Internet → SIMs → Add SIM.

I’ve tried reinstalling it multiple times through the menu without success. Installing it via F-Droid doesn’t work either, probably because it’s a privileged app.

I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but I’ve relocked my bootloader.

I hope someone can help me resolve this issue.

I’d also like to add that only after reinstalling it from the Preinstalled Apps menu and then installing it via F-Droid does OpenEUICC appear in the Settings → Apps menu. Installing it only from the Preinstalled Apps menu isn’t enough. However, there’s still no app icon in my launcher and no Add SIM option available.

I just managed to fix the issue by going to Settings → Apps → OpenEUICC, tapping the three dots in the upper-right corner, and selecting “Uninstall updates.” It displayed a message saying: “Replace this app with the factory version? All data will be removed.” After confirming, the app became available again in the menu.

For anyone experiencing the same issue, here’s what I did:

  • Reinstalled it via the Preinstalled Apps menu
  • Rebooted the phone
  • Installed it via F-Droid (which only made the icon appear in the app menu, allowing me to perform the “factory reset”)
  • Finally, uninstalled the updates as mentioned above

You can now update it via F-Droid again, and OpenEUICC is working properly again.

Glad you got this sorted!

With us now providing the OpenEUICC app via our F-Droid repo I wonder if possibly you needed to remove the update as the bundled version as part of “Preinstalled Apps” at the system level was the pre F-Droid repo version.

There is a bit of uncertainty in my understanding on how this is all handled, but I may do a bit of testing as the Preinstalled Apps behavior when the extra variable of updates from the F-Droid repo being applied seems to cause a bit of a mix up at times.
