Can Yahoo Mail app work on iode?

Hello,
I tried to find an answer to my question in previous posts, but I could not find it.
I managed to install Yahoo Mail from Aurora Store, however, more often than not it does not work. When I click on it, it opens for a second and then immediately closes. It does this when on mobile data and WiFi. I have been able to use it once or twice, but it is not reliable - it does not work most of the time.

Is there a workaround this problem? Or am I missing something? I’m on Google Pixel 3.

Sadly, I need Yahoo Mail as most of my life is there (I created it before I knew anything about privacy).

If Yahoo allows IMAP connections still (I forget, they may have disabled them), then I would suggest that much better than the app itself is adding the account to Thunderbird.

But to the app itself, can you check if any permissions under Settings > Apps may be unchecked that could cause this that the app may assume, such as maybe notifications?

Also check in the iodé app under the “stream” tab at the bottom when attempting to open the app to see what it may be blocking there?

If you see things getting blocked but aren’t sure what part is causing the hangup, a good strategy is to go to the “Home” tab of the iodé app, click on “Apps under standard protection” at the bottom, and remove the standard protection from the app having trouble. This effectively disables any intermediate blocking of traffic from the app (so it will not be privacy respecting during the testing). Then try again. If the app is now working, you can re-enable standard protection, and then under “stream” you can remove blocking from a specific blocked link one at a time that seems like it may be causing the crashing.

Lastly, and maybe “best” if you don’t need it continually running in the background, you can open the site in the web browser, and choose (Browser) Settings > Add to Home screen. This will just make an app launcher shortcut to the webpage.

Anyway, none of these may work satisfactorily, but they are ways to try and dig into why it is crashing.

Hi @rik thank you for the comprehensive answer! These are the results of me trying your suggestions

I’ve never used Thunderbird before, so I didn’t know this was an option. I will try to add my Yahoo account to it tomorrow, as today I failed the test of being human (or so the captcha bot thinks - how degrading is it that your humanity is gauged by a bot… and you fail the test!).

I have allowed some notifications in the Yahoo app, but it still closes down.

It does flag up some Yahoo stuff in “stream”, but it does that for other apps too and they work.

I removed the “standard protection” but it still wouldn’t work.

I discovered that it closes down if I’m connected to the WiFi or mobile data. But if I’m offline it opens the app. So it must be somthing to do with the connection permissions. Any idea?

Thanks!

The Yahoo Mail app often crashes on iodéOS because it relies on Google Play Services, which iodé doesn’t include. To fix this, you can install microG (if not already included), which helps apps run without Google. Alternatively, use Yahoo Mail through a web browser or a third-party email client like K-9 Mail or FairEmail, which work well with Yahoo via IMAP and don’t need Google services.

Thanks @rohit045 that’s what I was suspecting. But I have microG, so I was surprised that it didn’t work for Yahoo.
I will look into K-9 Mail and FairMail, thanks for the recommendation.

UPDATE: I managed to make Yahoo Mail work in Thunderbird.
