Camera quality again: Shift or Fairphone?

Any opinions which of the devices from FF and Shift offers the best camera quality with Iode OS?
Inferior camera quality is till one major counter argument for “normie” users…

Both Cameras seem to be good.

Fairphone even has optical image stabilization.

See here (German only, sorry. You can use translate)

Thank you. On most (?) custom ROM’s image quality isnt as good as on the stock ROM though, so comparing the devices running their stock ROM might not be indicative.
Or is that camera software issue not one on FF and Shiftphones?

Currently, Aperture still runs by default on the SHIFTphone 8 with ShiftOS-l or CustomOS. The stock camera app is stored in the Shift-F-Droid repository. However, it is not yet fully functional on ShiftOS-l and CustomOS due to missing full support of all camera features (I believe that was Panorama & HDR). Shift would like to make the camera software completely open source (as soon as it is comleted) so that it can be incorporated into LineageOS (and eventually into other CustomOS).

Good points. I guess, it has to be checked, if there is a way of running the original camera apps.
This shouldn’t be as complicated as installing the Google Pixel Cam was before 6.9

In reality, non of mentioned phones has superior quality camera SW. If you will compare them with “normie” top camera phones, you will find that ton of money and plenty of SW technicians dedicated only to camera SW development cannot be beaten by small independent companies and OpenSource camera SW. For me, the lack of camera SW is also the main downside of any degoogled phone. But it could be solved by dedicated small size real camera as a daily carry around device. I use Canon R8 with RF 16mm F2,8 STM lens. It is quite small, low profile and not heavy.

Yes, this is quite accurate in my understanding as well. The pre-processing that the manufacturer-specific camera apps can do simply can’t be done via post-processing.

We can install Google Camera on Pixels (and deny network usage), but I think for Fairphone the standalone app isn’t as easily obtained outside of FairphoneOS? Would take some Fairphone users to report back on that.

Regarding Shift, maybe the same? If the app can be obtained maybe it can be side loaded?

Sony is another one people have requested, but again it is difficult to install as I understand.

The pre-processing has not yet been completed. Once that is done, the open-source code will be incorporated into LineageOS (as Shift has already done with other shares), so that it will then be LineageOS’s responsibility for Aperture to access this pre-processing. If that doesn’t happen, you can always use Shift’s official camera app, which is included in Shift’s F-Droid repository.
