Anyone using Android Auto?

I have read that support for Android Auto was added to the iode V5 release but notice that it’s still not on the compatible app list. Can anyone confirm the current status of the app’ and point out any components that do not function, if any? Tx

Hi. I use it with Magisk and aa4mg stubs.
I can use comaps and other apps.

Thanks for getting back to me squid. So technically speaking if set up correctly, it can run on iode, but not an easy install for non-techies. The reason I was asking is because I have been asked the question by someone interested in a Sony XZ3 I put up on ebay a couple of days ago and it’s not an app I’m familiar with. I didn’t want to mislead them into thinking it was just a straight install exercise. Thanks for your response. Appreciated!

I had it running briefly on Iodé 5. Apart from installing the two stub apps mentioned in anotege thread, there was nothing complicated about it. I’ve not used it since - my car is too old, and I was just checking or worked in my wife’s car.

The guy got back to me expressing reservations but says he is going to look in to it which is really what I needed to hear. I have had a couple of phones returned due to some users expecting to get everything on demand that they are used to getting from a Gandroid phone. The thought that they may have to accept the odd compromise in order to maintain their privacy appears to be too much to ask.

Hi. Complement: I just uninstalled Magisk and, instead, installed Google, Maps and Google TTS with Aurora. Android Auto works as well and it is not techy.
I have forbidden any background activities and not provided any rights to those Google apps though.

@Russian_Spy_Bear there is this intro: Android Auto - iodé It basically is along the lines of what @squidf notes, and doesn’t have to be “overly tech-y” if you just use the Google apps. If you use the stubs there are a few more steps, I do want to better organize the guidance on that but I only occasionally have access to a car supporting Android Auto

Just been to and read the Android Auto link you kindly provided @rik . Does seem a lot easier than I imagined so every reason to believe it will be of interest even if you have to compromise on the privacy angle. Really needs adding to the officially supported apps list as some of the information I read from previous posts on here is clearly out of date. I will forward the link on to him. Much appreciated.

I’m using it on Iode 6. All the extra Google apps required I just installed stubs. I only use Waze and Spotify with Android Auto and use USB wired. Works perfectly. Took a while to tune permissions to get them as minimal as possible without breaking anything.

I have a car available for the next 3 days to test Android Auto on. But I am having trouble locating the Google Maps stub (I have the general AA stub and the Speech Services stub apps). Do you have a link for the Maps stub? I’ll try to consolidate some notes on this after I get it working. I’ll also be testing AA wireless.

Update: I found this one, a few years old, maybe still OK?

I dont have the link anymore at least I can’t find it right now. The sha256sum of the APK I found is: ee52bbf85757162ccf9da83295004962e76a600a077276cfc55d8fe2f71040ac but the stubs are really simple anyway. Few years old should be fine

I have no reason to think wireless won’t work. I only use USB because I need the phone to be on charge as well and it means I can “ban” Android Auto talking to the Internet using Iode app

When you install aa4mg zip (Release v0.6.4 · sn-00-x/aa4mg · GitHub) as a module with Magisk, you will have the choice to install the stubs you want. Maps stub is one if them.

OK I got the Maps stub (link I used is above), but I am starting by not wanting to use Magisk.

So with the 3 stubs installed, I connected via bluetooth to the car (2024 Toyota Crown) as it seems to not have any data connection with USB cable. It did prompt for AA, and complained about not giving permissions for notifications, which I had given for the the AA and 3 stub apps, but there was another prompt for it eventually after digging around to allow.

After that, it did seem to work, however the first time it connected there was no sidebar to select what app to show, instead it had Organic Maps 2/3 of screen and Spotify 1/3 of screen, but I couldn’t close them or change apps etc. I then disconnected and reconnected, and this 2nd time the sidebar showed, and I could then open other apps (however, CoMaps wouldn’t load correctly… but OSMAnd~ did just fine). So I guess it was all working.

However, after that 2nd (successful) connection, I can’t get it to connect again. I will need to go out and tinker again on it to re-try some things on my test phones (I have 2 Pixel 3a XL here for testing so I don’t muck my Pixel 7 Pro daily driver which I did these initial tests with).

OK, I have done some more trials, I think the issue I am having is more with the AA wireless / Toyota implementation buggy-ness than anything else. I have 3 iodé devices I am testing:

Pixel 7 Pro with 3 “stub” apps
Pixel 3a XL with Google apps
Pixel 3a XL with “stub” apps

The 2 with “stub” apps do seem to have issues where after one or maybe 2 tries it then they will not be detected as AA enabled by the car, and will only connect to share media and calls. Even then, it seems I need to forget the connection and re-try.

With the “Google apps” phone, it does more reliably detect as AA enabled, I think. But then it also got stuck and wouldn’t connect after a few tries.

So something just isn’t very reliable so far. I will continue more tests when I can get access to a car with wired AA. I do know users such as @Guardian24 use wireless AA, I think with the actual Google apps, they may give some more feedback if they see this message.

Yes, using AA wirelessly on Brax3 running iodéOS 6.6 with a cheap Chinese wireless only car screen. Have the actual Google apps not signed in and permissions denied and Magic Earth for navigation.
Before there was an update to the Google app, it only worked wired (wife’s car, mine is wireless only). Guessing with the “stubs” wireless would still not work as they are based on an older version of that Google app

Working perfectly here as well with:
Pixel 7 pro on iodé 6.6.
Google app, google maps, google speech TTS installed.
After initial connection to my car by USB I blocked network access for google app and tts (i am using google maps without signing in a google account but guess you can also block acces for it).

I am always quite carefull with installing apks. Is it safe to install the stups?

there are no guarantees, but these stubs require no permissions nor internet access, so the harm they can do should be fairly minimal

Thanks a lot

FWIW I am still trying to get AA operational on BraX3 with a voice assistant and using stubs not G apps. Not having much joy. As there are multiple threads on AA currently thought I’d just post a link to the one where I am sharing my current experiences / efforts:
