Advice needed on transferring (if possible?) an eSIM to a Pixel 8a with a newly-flashed ROM (iodeOS)

Hi all,

Has anyone ever dealt with a transfer (if there IS such a thing) of an eSIM when using a new mobile OS on the same phone? Specifically, if there are any US users of iodeOS (or any de-Googled ROM) with experience on this, I’d be grateful to hear about it!

Details: I have a Pixel 8a, and my mobile carrier is AT&T. I told @rik in another post that this is a new situation for me, as I’d used the 8a as a wifi device for a while (I flashed GrapheneOS onto it almost immediately after purchasing it) and then simply brought the phone to a local AT&T store, where they ported my phone number from an iPhone to the Pixel. This time, I’ll be bringing the same Pixel in after having flashed first stock OS, and then iodeOS 6.8, so I am assuming that my current eSIM will be toast.

Could anyone advise? Is my assumption correct in that a new eSIM will need to be created by AT&T so that I can use the phone?

Thank you very much for your time!

Wow! Thank you, @Taurus-II ! I did not even think to check AT&T’s website before posting… I feel foolish. This looks really promising! And if I can do this from home without having to go into the store, that is even better.

Thanks again! Much appreciated!

Also thanks to @Taurus-II from me. Some day I’ll have to stop being so “blissfully ignorant of eSIMs”

@jazz-linux-sino-geek after you confirm it works, can you give a very short summary of how it went migrating, then mark this thread “solved”?

 I’m fairly ignorant of eSIMs, too! But I load all of mine on a physical, writable eSIM card from Soprani.ca/JMP Chat - my Sony is not natively eSIM-enabled - so I can just move the card from one phone to another at will, and write new eSIMs to it with an eSIM reader/writer, and manage them with the JMP SIM Manager app from F-Droid. No need to involve the phone networks.

I am using a Google Pixel 6a, with Tello, using an eSIM provisioned from them. The phone also has a physical SIM from Vodafone Romania. I’m currently in the USA and have disabled the Vodafone RO SIM.

As for porting the eSIM between devices, I’d moved it between my Pixel 4a and 6a several times. That turned into a situation where Tello disabled the eSIM too many times, and I had to beg them to reenable it. The Tello dashboard area has an area for loading an eSIM into a device. So, as I installed different OS’s (because I had some difficult issues to diagnose, and repeatedly tried different OSs), I’d go to the Tello dashboard to set up the eSIM again and again.

There was no problem except for the issue of switching between the 4a and 6a

Thanks for sharing your experience, @robogeek ! I will probably be making the switch sometime in the next month or so. I’m encouraged to see that AT&T has an area for eSIMs on their website, as I loathe going into the retail stores for assistance. I appreciate your input!
