### _Short Description:_

Pixel 8 stopped looking for WiFi networks. Other devices work fine on my home wifi. Tried rebooting both phone (several times) and router. Each time I go back to Internet settings, “Use Wi-Fi” is off. When I turn it on, networks don’t appear. When I leave Internet Settings and go back, “Use Wi-Fi” is off again. 5G Mobile service works fine, but mobile service is lousy in my neighborhood.

Speculation is that your dns connectivity check is failing, and then the system thinks you don’t have internet so possibly disables the connection? Can you check on that and report what dns servers are set for your home network devices? (In my case before, cloudflare `1.1.1.1` was causing this issue, but after changing to quad9 `9.9.9.9.` the check works again and there are no issues)

> [@Captiveportal.kuketz.de DNSSEC issues again](https://community.iode.tech/t/captiveportal-kuketz-de-dnssec-issues-again/7469/6):
>
> I switched from cloudflare to quad9 as the dns provider for my LAN, and the issue went away. So it must be something with cloudflare not resolving [captiveportal.kuketz.de](http://captiveportal.kuketz.de) after whatever change from Kuketz was implemented? Anyway, I am counting my issue as a “false positive”.

At one point I decided to put the phone into a safe mode that disables all apps. The next morning I found that it could find the networks again. Not sure what to think about that.

Again there is a difference between the connectivity check reporting you have no internet and it not having internet. So clarification is needed.

If it is truly it not able to detect and use wifi then this is a bigger issue. Has this always been true since first installing iodéOS?

No, it’s an intermittent issue. This time safe mode is not helping.

It’s still an issue. I’ve tried switching from automatic to Cloudflare, and that hasn’t changed anything.

Are you running any additional VPN or firewall app such as Netguard or other?

Good question. I was running Mullvad VPN, but I just disabled it, restarted iode and I’m still not seeing any wifi networks. I go to the screen that says “Use Wifi” but it doesn’t do anything and then when I go back to the screen, it’s disabled again.

In reference to a previous question, my Private DNS Mode options are automatic, Cloudflare, Quad9 and an opportunity to enter another server. I’ve tried all of the options, but that doesn’t seem to change anything.

It’s also worth noting that between now and the last time it went out, I actually switched ISPs from Spectrum to TDS, and my phone has had difficulty connecting to both, though in the beginning it was fine. Though, like I said, I once got it to work when I put it on safe mode and left it that way overnight. But I haven’t been able to successfully replicate that fix.

Late reply, but did you try “System Settings \> System \> Reset options \> Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi”?

Just tried that. Doesn’t work unfortunately. I go into Network \> Network & Internet \> Internet \> Wi-Fi \> and toggle “Use Wifi” on. I go back and “Use Wifi” is toggled offagain.. Wifi is supposed to be scanning at all times but doesn’t at all.

I’m lucky that the mobile service is not too bad in this neighborhood–I just switched mobile carriers after encountering dead zones with two previous carriers. But I haven’t been able to connect to wifi in about seven weeks

I am running iodeos 7.7 on a pixel 8, I have run into issues while trying out Private DNS settings.

I ended up removing the Quad9 app completely and that helped.

I have had to do a lot of debugging using VPNs that were causing network connectivity issues. But all this was on my current Linux distro (Garuda Dragonized). What was giving me all sorts of random failures was the VPN’s killswitch feature combined with dual tunneling. Again this was using Linux and not a phone OS. You may want to remove all the user installed software relating to DNS and VPNs and see if that fixes things.

Thanks. I uninstalled Mullvad. I had no DNS software that I myself had installed. Restarted phone, but problem persists.

I should have been clearer in my reply. I meant to say that your should uninstall any vpn software and remove any settings changes in the android options relating to DNS options. My problem on the Pixel 8 occurred when I installed the Quad9 software. Besides setting up the Quad9 private DNS host, it also installed the Quad9 Connect VPN. My problem went away when I removed all of this and made sure that, for any network configurations, I was at the default.

I am a bit confused: you report a lot of switching of DNS providers, etc. but this is after you would connect to a wifi network and so any discussion with that isn’t really related to seeing what networks are available to connect to right? What I mean is I wouldn’t think anything there is related to actually turning off the wifi radio.

I hate to suggest it but a backup / reset / restore may be in order if nothing else seems to help?

I went ahead and did the backup/reset/restore. I did so because not only was I having problems with wifi, but I noticed other irregularities such as charging not stopping at 90% even when I have that toggled in Settings and refusing to charge at all when I put the setting at 80%. Plus at random times Iode will shut down and restart. I’m used to using alternative OS installations on my laptop–I’ve been a Linux user since 2008. But this seems like a unique challenge.

However, upon doing the reboot, not only did the wifi problem not change, but mobile connection became so difficult that I can’t re-download my apps. I go on to Aurora and no session begins. So now, I have something that can only send texts and make phone calls. The calendar I use depends on downloading DAVx and an ICS app.

I notice that there is a circle with the mobile bars which seems to indicate something wrong with the mobile connection. I get only two bars in my neighborhood, but even when I drive to an area with four bars, Aurora still won’t connect–maybe because of that weird circle? It shows the correct mobile network so I don’t know what the problem is.

Suspecting that maybe there was something wrong with the hardware, I took the phone to a repair shop, but they said that the Pixel 8 rarely has hardware issues with wifi and mobile and suggested that the OS may be the issue. He suggested that using the Google OS at the bootscreen could diagnose it and perhaps solve it. I’m not inclined to do that at this time.

I’m wondering if the phone came installed with a corrupted copy of iode? I sent a message to Private Phone Shop, where I bought the Pixel 8. I’ve only had the phone since early June.

</div>

I have mobile working again–I remembered there was a specialized APN I had to enter. But I get a lot of “server busy” messages when I try to redownload my apps. I never had this before.

I am still suspecting that the version of Iode that was pre-installed on my phone might be corrupted. I don’t know if that’s the best explanation for why my phone behaved erratically like I described above and why my phone stubbornly won’t look for wifi networks.

Is that something I should try? I’d need guidance on how to do so. Or is there something else I should try first?

FYI I sell these too at [OpenMobile](https://openmobile.us/store/p8/) and haven’t had any issues with them, but of course I am not sure how PrivatePhoneShop does the installs. I hope they are using our stock images.

When hardware issues like this happen, the standard advice is to reflash back to stock first, then to iodéOS. You don’t need to have it online, but sometimes it helps if a prior custom system on it may have modified various parts that leave it in an unclean state. I just replied to a Pixel 7 user who had issues resolved by a re-install, for example: [Unable to open settings - #5 by Slippyswede](https://community.iode.tech/t/unable-to-open-settings/8556/5)

What does it mean to “reflash?” I imagine by a “stock image” you mean an image of the OS. I’ve installed different Linux operating systems on my laptops by using ISO images. How would this work on an Android phone?

Reinstall in a Chromium based browser by using the “flash” link for the _not newest_ Android 16 build for your device from [Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices &nbsp;|&nbsp; Google Play services &nbsp;|&nbsp; Google for Developers](https://developers.google.com/android/images)

After that, no need to connect it to the network if you set it up to re-enable `adb` so you can use our graphical installer. Or if you use our manual install process, no need to set it up at all, just have it in fastboot mode and after the Google flash you run our process.
