Couldn’t find any existing recent posts specifically referencing this - but since the last significant update to iodé (7.7 at end of July with new ioDroid app store, etc, and significant updates to many apps following that) I’ve had some ongoing issues notifications:
After the update many notification settings seemed to have been overwritten and set to new defaults, and numerous apps starting having notifications that they hadn’t previously (or that had been disabled by default or I had previously disabled).
The bigger issues however being 2 separate unique notifications for the same app same notification, AND extra notifications that never used to previously be there. This isn’t 100% of the time, but is the majority of instances. And,
Some notifications intermittently completely bypass volume control and play at maximum volume (i.e. regardless of volume setting of device incl. the incoming call phone ringer).
The worst example of this last specific issue is the clock app:
When you minimise the app it plays a generic unnecessary default notification sound for no apparent reason other than it’s been minimised. It does this every time you minimise the app
If you set a timer or alarm (for example) when that time or alarm activates you get both the unique notification sound you set for it, AND a separate notification sound with the default notification - so two different sounds playing simultaneously. This happens about 75% of the time. This is particularly bad when the ignore volume setting bug sets in as well so you get both effects (2 different alarm sounds both playing at maximum volume).
I’ve spent several weeks playing around trying to figure it out and find some of the new notifications in the settings and where they are controlled, and testing disabling some or changing them to silent (e.g. for the clock one was the “app firing” notification I don’t recall seeing there previously), but they have either had no effect or completely killed all notifications for the app concerned so had to be instated. So have reached the point of being stumped by this.
So appreciate any insights? Could be individual apps causing the issues but has consistently affected multiple apps from the moment I installed the last OS update. Or have I missed something really obvious with the app notification settings in the newest version?
Anecdotally the ignore volume setting bug seems to be worst after a reboot, and over time (few hours to a a day or so) then gets less frequent and disappears; and eventually doesn’t reappear at all after a while until the device is rebooted again.
Note this is happening on my BraX3 (which is my daily driver).
My Pixel 8 Pro appears to possibly do similar things (at least for issues 1 & 2 above) when I test them - but I haven’t tested it thoroughly enough to be certain yet (this is only my back up device, not a daily driver). Also can’t comment on the random volume issue with the P8P as it’s not used enough for that, and not set up for use for calls.
P.S. The Updater app also appears differently on the Brax3 to the P8P - the latter still displays it in the old format since the update, while the former has a new GUI in the app.
I think they re-worked notification settings for it, with the “notification about an alarm” not being the alarm itself. Maybe the re-work basically reset pre-configured notification settings?
Regarding the P8P showing the older Updater format, that means you have not uninstalled a local update to it that was needed previously for the v6-to-v7 update or maybe a local version for beta updates (now the “beta” switch is part of settings, not a different version of the .apk). Uninstall the local update from App Info > Top right 3 dots > Uninstall Updates. Then restart the updater and see where you are at. If on 7.6 that is the old updater still, only comes with 7.7+.
Hi @rik - have posted on that other thread, however this fix (noted by droidkiwi) hasn’t resolved the notification playing when I minimise the app (or one or two other random apps).
I have set it to off as noted, to see if it helps with other issues (such as random audio notifications in middle of night from unknown source, even though DND is set) and with other clock related anomalies.
I still haven’t got to the bottom of some of the random notifications - as sometimes I can’t match them to a notification message on screen/in the notifications list.
The maxed out volume (bypassing volume control or setting volume arbitrarily to max) seems to have reduced somewhat, so happens only rarely now. Thinking it’s more likely something is moving volume setting to max rather than bypassing volume control… And also I know it’s not user error as I did do it the other day by mistake, because I was holding the phone differently to usual and had my finger on the volume up button inadvertently - so am certain the normal way I handle the phone I rarely have my finger near the volume up (on the BraX3).
Hi @rik just to confirm I had uninstalled that special updater at the time - as per the instructions, on both my devices. I have rechecked and it’s definitely not there. Also there is no uninstall updates option in the 3 dots menu (so no option called Uninstall Updates - see second screen shot). Here’s a screen shot of what Updater looks like on the P8P, and the expanded menu:
I have installed 7.8 (on BraX3), only just shown up in the last week in the updater - so will see if that changes anything… Still waiting for it to show on the P8P (always seems to take 3+ weeks to show up) - will see if that updates the P8P updater to new GUI…
Further to above: @rik@vince31fr I just realised the News app on my P8P is showing 2 updates since 7.7 on 20 July - but neither are showing in updater (and updater has old GUI as above). Do I need to nuke the phone and reinstall iodéOS from scratch? Or can I download the updates manually and do a local update?
And conversely I’ve just realised my Brax3 has updated to 7.8 (today) but the news app isn’t showing anything since 7.7 on the 20 July??! And the September update never showed - just the new October one in the last few days…).
Is there a setting I need to check somewhere or a cache that needs clearing for the news app?
So P8P has 2 news notifications of updates since 7.7 (in Sept & Oct) but is still stuck on 7.7 in updater (with the old GUI); and Brax3 is up to latest version of 7.8 (and has had new updater GUI since 7.7 in July), but has no news notifications since the 7.7 update on 22 July…
(…and neither have the old manual update(r) from 6.9 to 7.x still installed.)
