Several months ago, I used the iode blocker settings to block WhatsApp access to the network via wifi and mobile data. I recently went in and unblocked wifi and mobile data in the iode blocker. However, when I pull up WhatsApp, I still get the icon of the globe with a line through it in my status bar and an error from WhatsApp that my device doesn’t have an internet connection. I’ve tried this with a couple other apps and am having the same issue. Iode blocker has removed the block for wifi/mobile data per the apps UI, but the icon of a globe with the line through it still shows up and the “unblocked” app still can’t access the internet. It seems like the UI is claiming to have unblocked it, but the unblocking is not actually going through. I’ve already gone through a series of closing the various apps and restarting the phone.
Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing a setting/need to update something? Suggestions?
I’m running iodeOS version 6.8-20250929-tokay on a Pixel 9.
Please check the apps’ “long press app icon > App Info > Wi-Fi data usage > Allow Network Access” to make sure it is enabled.
Side note: to upgrade to 7.x (available for more than 9 months now) you need to follow this guidance:
To upgrade to version 7, you need to first install an update to the “Updater app” itself, as described in our iodé 7 release announcement: iodéOS 7 is Now Officially Available! - iodé So follow the link there to install the “v6-to-v7.apk” and then when you re-launch the “Updater app” you should find the most recent version 7 available to install.
The reason this one-time manual process is needed is due to LineageOS (our upstream source) making a change that disabled major version upgrades by default (like going from version 6 to version 7).
Thank you for the help. That resolved the issue. But it also raised some questions.
I didn’t change any network access settings in any of the apps to block network access originally. I used the iode blocker to remove wifi/mobile data per the UI. Is this the OS setting that the iode blocker is supposed to change on the backend?
when I reactivate wifi/mobile network access via the App Info route you provided, and then use the iode blocker UI to block wifi/mobile, the app still has wifi/mobile access. This is true even though iode blocker UI says the app is blocked. Why is there a disconnect here? Any suggestions about what is/isn’t working?
if the iode blocker UI isn’t correctly corresponding with wif/mobile network access status, is it still actively blocking malicious recipients?
Consider the iodé blocker to be at the “network traffic intercept” level, as it acts as a “person in the middle” (let’s face it, not only “men” can be in the middle Anyway, It detects attempted traffic and then drops it.
But when you remove access at the “AppInfo” level, it removes the permission entirely from the app to use the network. So no attempt can even be made.
So if you want to ensure an app is not able to use the network, it is more comprehensive to do it at the app level, and this would have precedence over any iodé blocker settings. But many users will not want to dig into that: it is a matter of convenience to be able to deny it at the iodé blocker level.
I can’t say as to how your app was denied network access at the “AppInfo” level to start this confusion for you, but am glad it is cleared up now!
