Erreur 127.0.0.1:8118

Since some time, I have regularly an error message:

“téléchargement échoué. Failed to connect to 127.0.0.1:8118“

It seems to be a proxy error, but I couldn’t find a way to solve this issue. Do you have an idea of the problem?

Thank you very much

127.0.0.1 typically refers to localhost meaning the device you are on. So it is looking for a service running on port 8118 on your current device (Fairphone 5).

Is this message just shown on your homescreen, or when using a specific app? Are you using a VPN?

It comes sometimes with Aurora store or F-droid, but not always.

Before, it happened very often with many App and disappeared after a few seconds. But this message didn’t seem to affect the app functionalities.

I have reset all the App parameters and now, the message appears much less, but still…

Yes, I use protonVPN most of the time.

I would guess that your errors are related to this? The apps giving the error may detect they are proxied through the VPN.

Thank you for the answer.

I guess that many people having a iodéOS phone use also a VPN.

Does anyone else have this kind of message ?

No, i have not, with Proton … Do you see any traffic in the iodé Blocker, when it occur? Proton doesn’t use a Proxy …

What I mean is without a VPN, an (oversimplified) traffic flow is this:

out: phone > Aurora > request to Play Store > https tunnel > Play Store
back: Play Store > https tunnel > Aurora

But with the VPN enabled, it is a bit like this:

out: phone > Aurora > request to Play Store > VPN Tunnel to Proton > https tunnel > Play Store
return: Play Store > https tunnel > VPN Tunnel to Proton > Aurora

Then if the VPN isn’t closed cleanly, maybe has a network blip, etc. the “secure connection between Aurora and Play Store” is questioned by one side or another and an error is thrown.

I may need to correct this oversimplified flow, possibly putting VPN “outside” Aurora.

What I wanted to say was that I haven’t seen the reported error yet. I’ve experimented a lot with ProtonVPN, “normal” VPN, with the stealth protocol, with Tor over VPN, etc. Aurora and F-Droid Store are included in the VPN.

I have no knowledge of how the iodé blocker works in the background …

127.0.0.1 … that definitely happens on the device itself … but there are also malicious apps that use something like that. Car Parking Apps Vulnerable To Hacks | Fox IT
Until last year …meta/facebook or Instagram and Yandex. On Android over 127.0.0.1 (localhost) connections between the browser and the installed app were used to recognize users via web-to-app tracking and link data such as cookies to device identifiers … so you should get to the bottom of the matter…
