Encrypted sending fails, but works on Stock Android

  • Device: Fairphone 3 (FP3), Android 15
  • iodéOS Version: iodéOS 6.18-20260826-FP3
  • Affected App(s): Thunderbird, OpenKeychain

Short Description:

I cannot send an encrypted email with Thunderbird for Android (version 22) together with OpenKeychain (version 6.0.4) on a Fairphone 3 (FP3) running Android 15 and iodéOS 6.18-20260826-FP3. For testing, I also generated a new key with OpenKeychain and linked it to Thunderbird. The error message when sending is: “Sending failed: Missing key for encryption: %s”. Since I do not send encrypted emails regularly, I cannot say since when this stopped working. It definitely worked at some point in the past, but I do not know exactly when.

New Issue, Regression, or Feature Request?

Additional Information:

For comparison, I performed the same test with the same newly generated OpenPGP key on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 running Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1. The Thunderbird and OpenKeychain versions are the same as on the FP3. On the tablet with stock Android, sending encrypted email worked without any problems.

Since the same key works on the Samsung device, an issue with the key itself seems unlikely. It therefore seems quite possible that the problem is related to the integration between Thunderbird and OpenKeychain under iodéOS. Is there a solution for this problem on the FP3?

I wonder if there is some permission missing, maybe “storage” access to the OpenKeychain pgp key location?

Hello rik, thank you very much for your reply! In Thunderbird, it says “all permissions allowed.” (translated from German)

Have you tested with blocking disabled for Thunderbird under the iodé app? Maybe something is happening there?

It may need a bit more research to see if other microG solutions work or not to help understand where the issue lies.

Thank you for the idea — I hadn’t thought of that yet.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help disable the tracker blocking. In the meantime, I cleared Thunderbird’s cache and storage and re-imported the email account profiles, but unfortunately that didn’t help either.

To check whether it might somehow be related to the linked email account, I linked another new key to a different email address and was actually able to send an encrypted email.

So now I’m going to try deleting the affected email account and setting it up again — maybe that will work. After all, it works on the stock Android tablet too.
