Using a pixel 8a on Iode OS 7.4, the Cape Mobile app does not work. When it tries to download/activate Cape Mobile’s Esim, the app errors out. Ive already opened a ticket with Cape. I really like Iode but for now I will be switching to Graphene until this gets fixed. This is just me spit balling but could it be that Cape doest have the right system permissions? I gave it all the permissions in android settings but it didnt change anything. Also Cape requires you to use their Esim through their app so using the iode esim default app (I can’t remberbthe name of it) doesn’t work with Cape. I will be watching iode for a from x, I really want to switch back.
Cape requires using their app instead of standard open eSIM management? Too bad!
Did you check app permissions and try disabling the iodé blocker for it?
Yes that was the first thing I tried. I have given Cape app all android permissions available; It still did not work. I think I narrowed it down to an OpenEUICC and Cape incompatibility. Cape works on Graphene with GoogleEUICC, and when CalyxOS stable is realeases Cape should work since they also use GoogleEUICC. I opened a ticket with Cape about the incompatibility.
Heya!
We require using our app because we use it to push carrier configurations that the user can’t set manually on most ROMs (specifically enabling VoLTE). Because AOSP only just recently (with the android 17 release) merged our carrier configurations (see this file) we still rely on the app to push them. Additionally, all billing, account management, and additional features (encrypted voicemail, IMSI rotation, Network Lock) are currently handled via the app.
Our current timeline for web-based account management is sometime next year, as we have many things we need to do first before we can start on something like that (like improving our authentication APIs) and we want to give people time to update to Android 17.
If you’re wondering why we cannot support OpenEUICC (the LPA shipped by iodé), their implementation is incomplete and currently does not support carrier apps (see this file).
If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out! Feel free to join our Signal group if you’d like to speak to me and other Cape employees directly about this (or other issues you may have). Otherwise, feel free to reach out to support.
Best,
